The war between Sweden and Russia in 1808. - 1809. ended with Russian victory, and gaining possession of Finland, which meant that it now became an autonomous Grand Duchy. Its constitutional Grand Duke was the Imperial Czar of Russia, but in Finland, the Czar was represented by a Governor-General. This implied in practice the birth of Finland as a state, since the liberal-minded Czar Alexander I allowed the country a large measure of self-government. The Lutheran Church retained its position, as did Swedish as the official language. Also, instead of Turku, Helsinki was named as the capital in 1812.
   Russian currency, Rouble, had started to circulate immediately, along with Swedish Crown for some three more decades. Then it was all replaced by the Rouble, and in sixties by Finnish Markka. Rouble continued to be legal tender until 1881. Of course, as in whole Russia, at the beginning, older coins were used, too, some even dating from early 18th century. There are even some evidences Russo-Polish money arrived in Finland and used with Rouble. As of very extensive volume, here below are described only coins 1801. - 1881., meaning coinage of emperors Alexander I to Alexander II. They are minted while Finland was under Russian rule.
