| In the aftermath of the horrific events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, my mind and heart keeps returning to a quiet Pennsylvania field where a few people displayed the true spirit of America when they refused to let the tragedy of their own deaths be multiplied exponentially. Did they save the President? Air Force One? The White House? Camp David? The U. S. Capitol? A hundred people? Or many thousands? We may never know. But, whatever target their captors had in mind, these brave souls preserved human dignity. Cries are going up to give them medals--even military decorations. Whatever posthumous honors are bestowed upon them, they have already honored themselves in the highest manner possible by their courageous and selfless efforts. God Bless all. |
| We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. --Abraham Lincoln Gettysburg Address |
