The Hunt

I truly love this time of year. I am reminded of a time when my cousins came from the City(Des Moines) to visit for a day or two.  I was at that impossible age of ten at the time. Just an ordinary Huck Finn/Tom Sawyer kinda kid. Well as they were set to arrive early afternoon. I went swimming with my neighbors and friends before their arrival. While at the local swimming hole my neighbor boys and I decided we would show those city boys a good time. I went home early to make the necessary preparations. I gathered enough burlap bags for every boy that would come from the city and flashlights too.  I then set out to find enough sticks of suitable size to compliment the rest of the tools. Well soon enough my cousins started arriving one by one. Until all eight of my boy cousins had arrived after dinner my cousins and my neighbors and I were all just talkin guy stuff the older boys sneaking a smoke. When I asked my cousins if any of them had
been hunting. None of them had ever been.  Woohoo this was going to be a red letter day. It was looking like I was finally going to get revenge on those city cousins after all.Well the oldest spoke up and said lets go. So we gathered the bags, flashlights and sticks and set out for the river.Which was about a mile to a mile and a half from our house. We smoked and joked along the way. As soon as we all reached the river. My neighbors and I explained that we were going to hunt snipe's. A mean spiny legged creature with wings and a sharp beak. To catch said creature one must lay down in the tall river grass and hold the bag open on one end and shine the flashlight through the other end. All the while calling the snipe closer and closer by yelling its name.

SNIPEEEEEEE SNIPEEEEEE SNIPEEEEEE.

We also explained that if they caught one it would give quite a tussle. Hence the sticks to kill it with. Well as soon as the city boys all settled down to call and catch a snipe my neighbors and I snuck back home and left those city boys to their own designs. As we were just about home my father saw us coming up the road from the river and wanted his flashlight so he could help one of my uncles fix his car. I lied and told him I didn't know where it was so he went to ask the neighbor boys dad and he couldn't find his either and then the neighbor on the other side of us with the same result. Well he must have figured I had something to do with this phenomenon. He cornered me out by the garage and asked me again what had happened to his flashlight. I set about the task of telling him what we had done and by the time I finished he was laughing so hard he didn't hear my mom walk up behind him. She asked him if either of us had seen my cousins and he just about gave it away. To this day I don't think my mom knows what
we did to my cousins.  But it was a great day.
