| An Unforgettable Journey by windfeather4u My friend Doug came over to my house one night. We hung around there for a while, and then we went to his house where his roommate was. His roommate talked about this guy that he knew who wanted to sell him his cabin, and he wanted to go check it out. So we hung around a while, and then I said let's go. So we got in my car and went to Mark Twain National Forest out toward the Cape Gerardo area in Missouri. It was down this rough dirt road hardly more than a trail. We got there and I wouldn't call it a cabin. It was more like a little two room shack with nothing more than an old keresene Heater (a seat warmer) for heat. It was cold that night ; about 20 degrees with a good wind chill factor. There we were in the cabin, when suddenly we heard howls. These howls were too deep to be coyotes, these were wolves, and we could hear them in a semi circle around us. We were sure they knew we were there, and they sounded hungry. We had a 30-30 out in the car, and I said I was going out to get it. I went and got the gun and came back in, and then something started scratching on the window. Doug freaked and yelled "Get out of hereeee!!!" and it quit. Later John, our other friend, had said that this guy had a pet possum and that was probably what it was. The wolves quit howling, and when we thought that it was safe we went to bed. We woke up the next morning without anything to eat, so Doug said to me, "You go through the brush and and chase a rabbit out, and when he comes out I'll shoot him." So there I was crashing through the brush trying to chase a rabbit out...nothing. Doug said "Go through the brush over here on this side." So I crashed through the brush on the other side of the trail. Still nothing. Then John said give me the gun and let me try to get a rabbit. So we gave him the gun, and he walked off twenty feet and shot a rabbit. Well that was something, but we had our meal anyway. Well I don't think I'll ever forget that trip for as long as I live. What an experience. |
