| What is Thanksgiving? by � artnsolitude Thanksgiving is the day that we give thanks for all of our blessings, and although it may not be a religious holiday, it is a Christian one. While we may thank our mothers for cooking the giblet gravy we must thank the Lord for the turkey itself. After all, if He hadn't created the turkey, we might be calling this chicken day, or maybe pork chop day, instead of turkey day. <smilez> Thanksgiving is the day when we can set aside our petty arguments and take up more important ones, such as who gets the drumsticks or the last bit of sweet potato casserole. We can go for double desserts without fear of Arnold and Miss Piggy jokes. Thanksgiving is a day to remember how beautiful our world is, and give thanks that we have the depth of heart to recognize and be moved by it. Not everyone has the ability to appreciate a beautiful sunset, the fragrance of a rose or the innocence of a child. Thanksgiving is the day for us to give thanks for life's lessons that help us to grow stronger, wiser and more understanding, no matter how difficult they may seem at the time. Every misfortune is accompanied by a benefit, though it may be necessary to search for it. Thanksgiving is the day that we should remember with peaceful hearts our loved ones who have passed away. On this day give thanks to the Lord that He gave that person into your life for you to know, and for you to love, and for letting them love you. Honor their memories by remembering their smiles and their laughter and the happiness once shared. Thanksgiving is a day for creating memories. Because someday we also will go to meet the Lord, and all that will be left of us on this world will be the pleasant memories of those we leave behind. And these times when we are all together make for the fondest memories. Thanksgiving is a day unlike any other holiday throughout the year: -Easter is to give thanks to the Lord for saving our place in heaven. -Christmas is to give thanks to God for the birth of our saviour. -July the fourth is to give thanks for our freedom and -Veterans day to those who fought or died to secure it .....Thanksgiving is different in that we are giving thanks tp God for each other. The only gifts exchanged are those of time and love, the two most important ones. Thanksgiving is the day we can insulate ourselves from the adversities of life and wrap ourselves in the comfort and security that comes from knowing that our family will always be there for us. We're unique in that we truly care for each other, each and every one. We realize the value and security of knowing that no matter what happens, we'll always have someone there for us. To love, support, care, and share our happiness and our sorrow. On this, my favorite day of the year, there's only one reason I can think of that would keep me from being thankful..... if I were forced to spend this day without my family. |
