Trail of Tears

They were workin their fields, cookin in their homes,
Rockin sleepy eyed babies, singin spiritual songs
Ridin high on livin till the soldiers came.
Jackson sent his men- Jackson sealed his shame

It was bayonets here; it was stockades there
Chief Ross led them in a Morning Prayer
Before the crackin whip signaled that wagon train
Through the rain and the snow across the icy plains

They were old, they were young, and they were in between
Wavin bye to the mountains where theyd always been
Smoky Mountain range homes of the deer and bear
You could hear hearts breaking in the silent air.

Without shoes on some and clothes wearing thin
Trapped in nightmares Jackson had snared them in
Always wakin to the death count of the dawn
Six hundred and forty-five wagons rolled on

Theres a river of Spirits on a Trail of Tears
With the sky for a blanket
On the wind you hear
Cherokee hearts stolen from a Smoky Mountain range
Tell me now, what were their names?
