The Time of The North

In the Cycle of the Day we find that the time of the North is more difficult to locate. It comes sometime between the setting of the Sun and its rising the next Day. Sometime between the West and the East arrives the North but the darkness makes it difficult to locate. In the Cycle of a Lifetime, it is equally difficult to locate. It would be easy to say that one goes from infancy to childhood to adulthood and then old age; it is easy to equate the North with the latter years of Life, but that is not exactly true. In the Cycle of a year, Winter is the Time of rest. The Plants have grown and born fruit, and now they return to the Earth to rest and await the Spring. In the Cycle of a Day, the night is the Time when we rest. In the Cycle of a Life, the North is not just a place of rest in the sense of being in the Dark and sleeping. It is much more. If we look at the old farming ways, in the spring they planted seeds and tended the soil, in the summer they were busy making sure the growth continued through weeding watering and pest control, in the fall the harvest was gathered and stored, leaving nothing more to do.When the Winter came the farmers would go into their homes and rest from tending the Land. They would not be idle though, taking this time to do their accounts, to see how much seed was used, and how much fruit that seed had produced, analyzing what crops did well and what crops did not do so well and the reasons why this happened. They would also sharpen the equipment repair the plows fix the harness and bag the seeds ready for next Spring's planting. Everything would be examined and scrutinized to make sure it was working properly and ready for use.... |
