The Story of Buzzard
by

How did Buzzard get to be the way he is? Long ago, you see, none of the birds had feathers -- they all went around in their bare pink skins, getting sunburned in summer, shivering in the cold winter winds, and enduring the year-round taunts and snickers of the fur-clad mammals. Finally it was decided that one of the birds should go petition The Creator for some kind of bodily covering, and Buzzard got the job (In some versions of this story he volunteered; others have him being tricked or bullied into accepting).

It was a long, arduous journey to visit The Creator, of course, and there wasn't much in the way of food along the route. Buzzard was forced to survive on garbage and carrion during the trip -- but eventually developed a decided taste for that sort of thing, and it became a family tradition among his descendants.

The Creator was agreeable to the birds' request to clothe their nakedness, and gave Buzzard a fine selection of feathers to take back to his brethren. Buzzard made himself a somber outfit of basic black, but decided to accessorize with an impressive topknot: huge, flowing feathers of every imaginable color. Unfortunately, he encountered some turbulent weather on the return trip and lost his beautiful headgear in a windstorm. Poor Buzzard has been bald ever since.... But every now and then, when the sun shines through the raindrops, you may catch a glimpse of the long, colorful feathers, still floating up there in the sky.
