| The Navajo by � LouReeves Along three hundred miles, they say, Eight hundred Navajo died, along the way. The physical and mental cruelty brought much pain, And even mothers delivering were simply slain. What happened is simply beyond belief, But to the Union soldiers it brought relief. To Fort Sumner, the Long Walk, was the name. General Carleton's name, forever to defame. Thus in 1864, the year of despair, Conditions at the Fort were beyond repair. With little food and rampant disease, And with no blankets, they did freeze. Five years later, after much strife. They returned to their homeland and their way of life. The Navajo Universe was there in belief. The Earth People and the Holy People to their relief. And if the Earth People were dutiful, The world was in harmony and most beautiful. So in the mind, the story is clear, And in the body, to feel much freer. For the tribe was strong, as it came along' And to the land, forever, it will belong. Lou Reeves/The Eagle |
