Thankful for Silent Hubbies

I am greatful for a husband who knows when to keep his mouth shut....
I have two kids and a lot of pets. Two cats "blessed" us with litters this summer...
gee thanks girls. One litter died except for one little kitten. Of course it had to come
IN breaking my maxim...NO CATS IN THE HOUSE. With two kids and one kitten
inside, you have to bring in another because if you don't you don't get any peace. In
came kitten #2 and the rest went to live elsewhere (including one of the moms.) So,
now life is sweet, I have the cat population down to 2 in and 2 out. That's good I can
live with that. Well, the first kitten was extremely stunted and small. I noticed he sneezed
here and there and I kept the yuck washed out of his eye, but he was sicker than I thought.
Like I said, he was very teeny tiny and though he was eating well, he was all fluff and no
body. A couple of nights later, I am in my son's room going over prayers when "Kitty"
walked in. He just walked a little crooked across the floor and fell over. Having seen a
lot of death, I took it in stride. Being the compassionate person I am and married to a
healthcare worker, I yelled "Hey, come here, ya gotta see this, someone just went into
shock!" He comes in and first thing out of his mouth is "Wow, doesn't look good for
kitty." We are both so engrossed in kitty trying to die that we kinda forgot our 7 year
old has not seen a lot of death. So the sweet son of mine takes off running into the living
room screaming at the top of his lungs "OH GOD, PLEEEEEASE DON'T LET MY
KITTEN DIE...OH PLEASE LORD." Well of course, my reaction is to look at that
kitten and say, "Gee thanks buddy." He didn't have the decency to try to die away
from eyesight where I could hide the carcass and say, "What cat? Oh, can't find him?
Maybe he ran away" Of course not.  So, here I am, one child asleep, the other about to
wake her up with his screaming, I have just gotten out of the shower and it's 9pm.

As I said, they have a lot of pets. Well, they HAD a turtle last summer and I decided he
needed to live outside in a pen, so I built a habitat in an old wash tub. Of course the
next morning he was gone. I still get reminded by not only the kids but hubby too cause
"Well moon, that turtle was pretty tame and eating well too." sigh. And of course I still
had the fresh guilt of two weeks before when I was messing with the rabbits and closed
the hutch door but forgot to lock it. Lot of screams that evening too cause they got out
and the collie was having a grand time chasing them. One ended up with a broken leg and
had to be put down. Thinking the kids did it, my husband is screaming, "WHO LEFT
THE D--DOOR OPEN!" It was a sad little hand I raised and said, "Uh that would be
me." So now the kitten is trying to die and I'm remembering hubby saying, "Dang moon,
you kinda hard on pets aren't ya?" I am listening to screaming prayers and looking at a
dead kitten. I wrap him up, we get dressed and here we go to the after-hours-one-
hundred-dollar-minimum vets. I am thinking, (Cat's dead meat) but I am saying..."Now
hon, you know sometimes animals get really sick and even a vet can't help them." I
walk in with the crying kid and the lifeless looking kitten. Ok, I am ready. Sitting there
waiting while the vet looks at him. Bracing myself for the bill and practising my "sorry
dead animals happen" speech in my head and the vet walks out. Well, I think we can save
the kitten. "OH man, don't say that in front of the kid" is what I am inwardly pleading. Now,
I am bracing myself for the bottom line. I am hearing words like "Start an IV, blood
transfusion, warmed fluids and special warming cage." Oh nooooooo my bank account
is taking wings and flying out the window. Well, four hundred and fifty dollars later (yes
you heard it right) kitty is revived and playing and hopping and I am thinking if it weren't
so expensive, I'd choke you myself..So the hubby....he ragged me about the turtle....He
was not happy at all about putting down a pet rabbit...but the money...he KNEW better..

He has never opened his mouth.
