The Soldier
by
riddleofsteel

Even though they have trained for battle a soldier hates war.

For it is the soldier that has gazed into the jaws of death.

Death is the soldier's constant companion and yet his least welcome guest.

It is the soldier whose blood and bones enrich the soil of a thousand battle fields.

Innocents may die in warfare but it is the soldier's fate.

The soldier knows the acrid smell of powder and the scream of the wounded in the trenches.

The soldier trains for battle but it is the forte of the politician and the old men to
beat the war drum.

The soldier bleeds and dies on distant battle fields, it is left to the ones left behind to say it was justified.

In the end the only one who really profits from war are the buzzards and the worms.
