Buttons

Younger,
I didn't understand
Looking homeward.....
Into dark memories-
That were always swimming
Wiggling
Just beneath the surface.

Mostly,
I tiptoed 'round them
(Much as possible)
Till the lightest breath,
Or mention,
Or smell
Would brush against their button
And they would leap
From the crowd
Of thoughts hanging 'round in my head....

Their screams
Always caught me
Off guard.

And I stopped to push them down,
Down,
Drown,
Down--
Pushing
And Holding
Them Under...
Must quiet them again.

Now
I see-
Only memories holding
No pain.
No fear.
Not Identity.
Only,
Only
Memories-
With buttons
Out of order.
