I Remember

I remember how the earth smelled...

The air so thick with death that it made your throat close even when you tried to keep it from happening.

The rain smelled like death, even my coffe smelled like death. Some say they got used to it...but I never did. I can even smell it not as it remains in my nostrils and renewed sometomes on a foggy raily day.

I was young and easily influnced. I thought that I was doing something good for freedome.

But how could hunting human beings in their own country be for freedom? Why were we there to start with? Why did they want us to leave?

They were communists...that is what we were told...we were also told that we had to bring democracy to this place.... even if they did not want democracy? Even if they did not want anything to do with it? Were we supposed to force it on them with our weapons and bombs? is that truly Democracy?

Sudenly I have a problem understanding what Democracy is. It is supposed to mean freedom...at least that is what I thought it meant. But does it truly? if people are forced at gun point to accept it is that truly freedom? What makes democracy so different from communisim or any other form of government? Is there truly and real difference other than the ideas?

The fact is, that more people have fought and died resisting Democracy, than they have defending it.

So, do we simply justify our actions with words? Are we right because we say we are? SO we kill and bomb and we are right because we are Americans, we have Democracy ?

Are not those crimes too? That we should kill others because we do not accept our ways?

We American Indians understand Democracy, it has been killing us for 500 years...it just was not always called Democracy....it was different excuses at different times.
