Sustenance

Father Columbus offered to buy my soul
For a hand full of beads and one stock
In the local Starbucks. To which I had to
Say no because I am a firm believer in home
Boiled Folgers. Besides I sold part of my soul
To President Chivington the last time he past
Through, and he was offering pieces of real
Estate in Arizona. I am now a proud owner of
One inch of mesa top somewhere outside
Of Phoenix, although I am still waiting for
The title, which is three owners behind me.

Another part of my soul I gave to Governor
Custer on his last fund raising drive, because
He seemed the epitome of dash and chivalry.
And the thing this reservation needs most, I thought,
Is cash and civility, which is close enough.
Especially for a backwoods, porch dwelling, brush
Running, honest to goodness native. I was
Only too sorry to get low on soul and not be able
To offer more. Goodness knows they all need it.

I retained part of my soul, thank you kindly,
Because the animals I keep for food were getting
Scrawny and mean to each other. And nothing is
Worse then a mean trout when it comes to dinner
Time. I also didn't want everyone in church to
Stare at me, because it's the most awful thing
In the world to see someone without a soul
Trying to convince the pastor that it's ok
To get a food voucher. You know, for when
What soul you have left isn't enough to feed
The dogs you have to eat.
