Guardian Spirits

I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, she raised me from knee high to a grasshopper. She told me a lot of things and showed me even more.

When I was sixteen and knew everything (don't all teenagers at this age? lol) my grandma got a call from the hospital. One of her friends, that she went root digging with and  cooked with at dinners, and spent time talking in indian too, was in the hospital and  wasn't expected to live.  One of the ladies children called my grandma to tell her that the lady had asked for her.

We jumped in the car,(even at sixteen I was still my grandma's tail) and headed for the hospital. When we got down there, we found her room and everyone left but my grandma and I. The lady talked for a while to my grandma in indian, then my grandma gave the  lady a hug and we left. She didn't say anything to me all the way home. When we got back to the house, I turned on the T.V. and was watching it in silence, late that night there was a knock on the door, I jumped up to answer it, at the same time the phone rang, my grandma answered the phone as I opened the door to find no one there. I looked at my grandma and told her someone was playing tricks. She sighed and said that her friend had just came to let us know she had left. The phone call had been from my grandma's friends family. The lady had left our world....

The next day was sunday, and my grandma woke me up while it was still dark, I was surprised usually sunday we didn't dig or fish or anything it was a day of rest. My  grandma said we were going to go and look around for roots. I was always happy to go  for a ride. We drove for hours and finally my grandma pulled into a large open area, big skunk cabbages, it wasn't one of our usual digging spots, and I was a little curious  how my grandma knew of it.

We sat there for a while, I will never know what my grandma was thinking, but my  thought was undiscovered territory. She turned to me and told me that this was a new  place and it wasn't ours, that there would be a gurdian that would come to look into us  to see if we were good people. I had heard many of my grandma stories and was sure that this was another grandma story. I joked and said well if he wants to talk to me he'll have to yell cuz my headphones are gonna be on. Her reply was just be careful!

We got out the car and she went one direction and I went the other. It was maybe a half hour or so later that I got that "somebody's looking at me feeling" I thought to myself I better start heading back towards grandma. So I aimed myself in her direction and  stopped here and there to dig a root or two to put into my basket. As I got closer to her I realized she was standing next to a very large skunk cabbage. I got even closer and  realized there was HUGE rattlesnake coiled up on the skunk cabbage. OH MAN! I tried  to Yell and run, but only pitiful little squeaks came out of my throat, and my body was frozen only my eyelids worked. So I did what I could and closed my eyes.

A million thoughts rushed through my mind. Did I remember how to get back to town? Could I pack my grandma to the car? Which hospital should I take her to? Do I need to  kill the snake?  I thought well I better look. So I opened one eye and to my amazement there she was bent over the snake, giving it a good tongue lashing. Well immediatly I thought Geez grandma that'll work on me but not a snake. They were nose to nose, and I figured that the snake was probably about fed up of that. I closed my eyes and figured the next time I opened them my grandma would be on the ground.

Well, when I opened my eyes again, she was back bent over her digger brushing dirt off a root.

AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!SNAKE!!!!!!!!!! My grandma must have
jumped 6 inches off the ground....

I ran over to her and began searching for bitemarks. She slapped the top of my head and asked what I thought I was doing. I rambled for a minute about a huge snake, hospitals.... She hit my head again and said that was the guardian. I wasn't sure if I wanted to laugh  or cry only that I was glad the snake didn't bite my grandma on the nose.

We went back to the car and ate lunch meat sandwiches and drank hot black coffee. She told me that this place is what her and her friend had talked of in the hospital. Her friend gifted this spot to us to caretake for her family..you see all of her children were succesful and had no time for things like root digging and she wanted to make sure it didn't get lost. She wanted to make sure someone knew about it in case one of her grandchildren ever asked.
