| Fond Memories by spottedfishspirit When I was around 6 or 7 I went root digging with my grandma on a saturday. We went to a large meadow to dig Indian Carrots. My grandma had this wonderful way of teaching me, she would give me the tops and the root and send me on my way with with my root digger to find my own roots. I looked and looked I thought I had found them but after a few tries with no success I became frustrated and began to cry, big alligator tears. I was very hard with the meadow and the roots, I remember laying on my belly hitting the ground and calling the meadow stupid, and telling the roots they weren't nice for hiding from me. Well I cried so hard I went to sleep. My grandma never worried I was allowed to run free, my grandma said the spirits would take cared of me. Anyway I remember waking up hearing a whisper in my ear...."hey,.... hey,...here we are come dig us!" I woke up looking at the sky. A big blue sky with big puffy clouds. I rolled over on my stomach and looked and there they were thousands upon thousands....I was laying in a big patch. I heard laughing, giggles of delight as I dug. I was so happy the first one I dug. I held it high in the air. And way across the meadow my grandma waved back, her bandana on her head so clear in my mind. When I got back to the house, I was ashamed of crying, and finally my grandma asked what had happened to me in the meadow. I sheepishly told her the story. She told me that the roots had realized how badly I wanted to learn so they showed themselves to me and that only special people ever heard their laugh. I have carried that story for a long time and wanted to share it with you all. SpottedFishSpirit |
