| My Ancestors Eyes by eaglespirits02 The young boy asked the old Indian man If he would tell him about his life The man answered slowly. "I'm ninety years old this year But I've lived through a thousand moons Never been on that mountain top But I have memories of it Never got to hunt the buffalo Like my many Ancestors before me I'm proud that I killed many of them Never got to soar the clouds with the Eagles Even though the breeze in my face I will never forget Never knew an Indian Medicine Man But enjoyed his presence each time he visited me Never walked in the hot desert sun But can remember the burning of my feet at the end of a long Journey there Never knew a white woman But I can still remember her pale flesh against mine" The boy stood up and looked into the wrinkled face Of the old man "You say you didn't do these things Then you remember doing them My mind is very confused by your words" The man smiled and explained to the boy, "I can see with my Ancestors eyes A gift from them to me Maybe your Ancestors Will give their sight and visions to you So you can tell their stories When you're old and someone asks about your life You can explain with words like mine to keep them wondering" Anne Leach |
