Her Red Eyes
by

The kids were asked to draw
A picture of the great outdoors
The sun and maybe some clouds
Across the blue sky
One little girl
Drew in her sky
A big Eagle
The clouds were in the shape of the Eagle feathers
The houses were Teepees
The dog was a buffalo
The ground she colored red
The people were brown
With long black hair
The Teacher asked the girl
Why she didn't draw what
Is really out there to see
No one else saw those things
She gave her a failing grade on her paper
The girl said with Pride in her eyes, her voice....
I was asked to draw
A picture of the outdoors
These things are what I see
With my Red eyes
You can give me a failing grade if you like
But my drawings will always be the same
I see the world differently than you
This you will never change
Guess as long as I see with my Ancestors eyes,
I will fail in yours
