The Dance
by

Next to the sacred Fire I sat
Engaged with others in idle chat
When suddenly stormclouds appeared overhead
And our hearts began to fill with dread

One booming clap, one thunderous roar
And then the heavens began to pour
"Cover it", I began to shout
"Protect the fire so it won't go out!"

But another with more sense than I
Said, "Don't cover it. Build it high."
So we added more tinder 'til the flames did glow
Added more wood to help it grow

Then larger pieces we set all around
To protect the inside - let the fire take ground
Larger and brighter the flames did roar
While down from the heavens the water did pour

Soaked to the bone, I still had doubt.
Would the raging storm yet put the fire out?
But as I sat there quite entranced
The Fire and the Water began to dance

He invited her in, with arms open wide
Yet careful to protect his tender inside
And she came to him, knowing full well
The sacrifice it would entail

In places she quenched him in bursts of steam
But the strength of each was always redeemed
Holding the knowledge of their own strengths dear
They gave to each other without any fear

Two "enemies" in my unenlightened eyes
Danced joyously to my wondrous surprise
Knowledge they held of the other one's power
Yet trust was shown by Fire and the Shower

Many lessons have I learned in this life
And now one more from my Grandfather's wife
When fear moves in, don't run and hide
Build it up! Build it up! And protect the inside.

Make your fire strong, then understand -
Strength and sacrifice go hand in hand.
Fire and Water's lessons can help us to live
In balance: Be strong, yet willing to give.
