The Southeast Texas State Fair

Growing up in Texas, there wasn't much to do
When the long hot dog days of summer left me bored and feelin' blue
But I knew it'd soon be Autumn and magic would appear
So I counted out the money I'd been saving up all year
For the

(chorus)
Southeast Texas State Fair
Where I had more fun than just about anywhere
Every October, my daddy'd take me there
To the Southeast Texas State Fair

We'd start with the livestock; brother'd lead the way
Lookin' for the little calf his friend had raised in the F.F.A.
'N we see pigs and bunnies, scratch 'em all behind the ear
'Til momma said, "Now y'all c'mon cause it sure smells in here!"
At the
(repeat chorus)

Then we'd go to the craft tent, momma's fav'rite place
We'd see dollhouses, hand-made quilts, and bedspreads made of lace
We'd see my Aunt Betty at her needlework display
Momma'd stop n' chat awhile 'til we dragged her away
At the
(repeat chorus)

At last there be the Fairway; daddy'd gripe about the cost
And momma would be hollerin', "Y'all kids now don't get lost!"
And I'd eat cotton candy and corndogs on a stick
And ride on the whirligig until it made me sick
At the
(repeat chorus)

We'd come home late at night; daddy'd tuck me in my bed
I'd feel the motion of the rides, the sights & sounds still in my head
And though I've come many miles and years since then
How I wish I could go back and be a kid again
At the
(repeat chorus)
