My Song of New Life
by

My head laying on the buffalo skull

I stare into the sky.

Visions of the stars and moon

pass before my eyes.

Spirits forms briefly glimpsed,

gathering one another.

A pow wow for our kindred beings,

thunder drums for our mother.

Stars shoot across the sky

leaving trails of fire.

The moons white face appears,

a coyotes howl admires.

I close my eyes in peaceful sleep,

visions dance before me.

I gather with the spirits

as they bring new life Ill see.

This my final dream,

the pain no longer throbs.

Mourners gather round me,

I listen to their sobs.

Go my child I whisper,

her mind reads my thoughts.

Think of good and smile,

rejoice in what Ive brought.

I rest on boughs above the earth,

my weathered bow beside me.

My shield hangs on the pole

painted with my deeds.

I am your protector now,

look to me for guidance.

Teach our children red from wrong,

wisdom, and abidance.

Travel light the road is long,

worldly goods a hinder.

When days lose numbers join us,

complete the circle as a member.
