| Going To See Grandma by chibilunacat The pregnant young mother emptied the ashtray into the garbage can after the young woman left that had come to visit, she could hear the sounds of the kitchen screen door banging shut filtering into the semi smoky room, barely audible over the record player, a soap opera played soundless on the televisions screen across the room. She set the now empty ashtray back on the table with a slight bump as the plastic touched the worn wooden surface, a piece of her long brown hair fell over her shoulder and hung down in front of her. She picked up one of her two year old daughters neglected toys with love, then looked for her in the room. Figuring her daughter had went into the kitchen or upstairs into the bedroom she got up off of the second hand, faded red and black couch and put the toy with the others. "Sara" she called to her daughter and went into the kitchen to find her daughter, smiling though worry was beginning to creep into every inch and ounce of her body and mind. ************************************** Outside the little girl saw the dark green car stop next to the patio, the woman with the short dark hair feathered back rolled down her car window and called out to her, something about going inside the house, the little girl paid her no real attention, she was going to go visit her grandmother. The woman rolled her window back up and sped off, dust trailing behind her car in little dirt devils, a few rocks flying, a crunch of tires as she left. The smiling little girl began to walk down the long dirt driveway, toward the highway they lived off of. ******************************************* "Sara!" the pregnant mother called, putting a couple glasses in the white porcelain kitchen sink. "Come here Sara, where are you?" she called, walking away from the sink and peeking into the bathroom, then the pantry room where their back door was, her husband was at work so she and her daughter were home alone, with no phone, her husband didn't allow a phone, he didn't want people calling him about business stuff while he was at home, he didn't want to talk to anyone on the phone period. Not seeing her daughter or hearing her, panic swept through all of her sending chills and a large shudder. "Sara!" she yelled louder, a bit desperately. She was about eight months pregnant with a son, she clutched at her stomach as she began to run out of the kitchen and to the stairs, then proceeded to trot up them as fast as she could, calling her two year olds name, tears struggling to come with panic, she fought it back, sure her daughter was safe upstairs just getting into some trouble like usual, nothing to worry about; but what was this unexplainable fear in her? ************************************* The little girl stepped onto the highway, and began to walk, thoughts of her grandmother making her smile and filling her mind. A huge truck went by in the other lane, and suddenly the sound of the air brakes being used filled the earth around her, but she kept going. She couldn't wait to surprise grandma. Suddenly she felt a strong force from behind her. ***************************************** "Oh my God! Outside!" the fretting mother called out to herself, one hand clapping over her mouth, her eyes widening. "The road, the road!" she said through her hand, beginning to run again, now down the stairs, taking two at a time, one hand trailing the wall and the other clutching her bulging belly. "Oh my God, just let her be all right!" she cried her prayer aloud as she ran through the kitchen to the door. The metal screen door slammed shut behind her but it was just meaningless background noise, her feet swished through the grass, then began to crunch on the scattered pieces of loose gravel in her long driveway, she could clearly see the highway ahead, an eighteen wheeler was pulled over on the side of the road and her heart caught in her choked with sobs throat, her legs almost wanted to stop, her knees wanted to fail and fold, binging her to the driveway on her knees where the gravel would bite in, but something, and inner strength and need to know, to protect, drove her on. Tears running off her face, hands clutching her swollen belly, she ran with everything within her, closer to the road. Just as she came closer a movement to the right, beyond the huge old red berried holly tree, caught her eye. Her tear filled eyes tried to focus through the salty water, she saw a man standing there, his hand was holding the hand of a small red haired little girl. The tears flowed stronger now as she saw her daughter. *************************************** The little girl saw her pregnant mommy running down the driveway towards her, she could feel some mans hand holding hers, he had whisked her off the road. All thoughts of her grandmother vanished as she saw her mother, fear crept into her, why was her mother so upset? She pulled away from the man and went to her mother who immediately embraced her. "Are you all right?" the man said, as she held her daughter against her, crying. "I know she's alright, but are you alright?" he asked, seeing the woman was pregnant full blown, and scared to death, very badly shaken. The young mother exchanged some words of thanks and heard how he saw her step out onto the highway and begin to walk, and knowing she shouldn't be there he pulled over and rescued her. He had met her and her husband through his brother once or twice before, but didn't know them well, still, he saved the girl. ************************************* The young mother sat in the chair with her daughter in her lap, she was still crying and now the scared daughter began to cry too as her mother explained why she wasn't to go off like that ever again. The daughter agreed to obey her mother and they hugged for awhile, sitting in the chair. She never wanted to see her Mommy upset like that again, even if she didn't completely understand what happened. Terra Mae *A true story, of me and my mother, I was nearly 3* |
