| Child Heroes by chibilunacat It was a warm night. Night overly warm, but warm, a slight breeze ruffled the hair on her forehead as she stood on the balcony of the guest bedroom, clutching the wearing brown teddy bear under her left arm, and holding the smoothe stone railing under her right hand, she was just able to see over the railing, her light pink pajamas swayed in the wind. She was stairing at the sky, smiling at the twinkling stars. "You been waiting long Sammy?" came the boys voice behind her. She merely shook her head no, not replying, or turning to look. "What are you doing anyway?" "Just looking at the stars, they're so pretty!" Samantha sighed, finally turning to look at her twin brother. "What kept you?" "Blake wouldn't fall asleep fast enough, sorry." Simon sighed, joining his sister at the railing. "Oh" Samantha shrugged. "You ready?" "Yeah, let's go." Simon smiled, beginning to hoist himself up onto the railing. "Hey, wait a minute, you aren't taking that thing again are you?" "Of course, why wouldn't I?" Samantha smiled smugly, knowing Simon hated it when she brought her Teddy bear along. 'You're such a baby!" Simon rolled his eyes, sitting up on the cold stone railing now, his light blue pajamas ruffling and moving with the breeze as though rats were running beneath his shirt. "Well that makes you one too then, we're the same age." Samantha stuck her tongue out at him. "I was born first, so you're more of one dummy!" Simon teased, sticking his tongue out as well and laughing. "Oh shut up!" Samantha nearly shouted, smacking her brothers leg. "Keep it down stupid, if we get caught out here they'll have our hides!" Simon frowned. He pulled himself into a standing position on the wide railing, he glanced up at the sky himself, the stars twinkled in his blue eyes. Feeling his sister take his hand he helped her onto the railing beside him, Samanthas long black hair blew into his face some as she stood beside him, he pushed it away from him and followed her as she walked along the railing towards the tree branch they used to sneak down on. "Hey, Sam, keep your hair to your..... whoa!!" Simon exclaimed breaking off. Samantha turned quickly, just in time to see Simon fall from the railing, his arms flailing and his eyes wide. "Simon" Samantha called, hurrying to the tree branch to get down to him, Simon!" Samantha clinched the teddy bears arm in her mouth as she climbed as quickly as she could down the large tree, sometimes leaping from branch to branch. She approached her brother, who lay flat on his back on the ground, his arms and legs spread out. "Simon!" she loudly whispered, holding the teddy bear in one hand again, she bent down beside him on the ground, her purple eyes large and watery, full of fear, she leaned closer to her brothers face. "Simon!" Suddenly his mouth twitched into a smile. "Gotcha!" he laughed. "Simon!" Samantha half shouted, half squeeled, smacking him as he sat up. "Shhhh!" he hissed. "If you were so worried why didn't you fly down?" "Simon, you........." Samantha frowned, confused. "You said not to fly around the house so the others didn't see us!" "Yeah, I know!" Simon chuckled ruffling his twin sisters hair. "Geez, I bet you'd have flown down if it had been your precious teddy bear!" "Get real!" Samantha muttered as she stood up, smoothing out her pajamas around her, her teddy bear dangling by one arm, she then pulled it to herself and looked over at her brother who was brushing dirt off of his bottom. "Come on, we're already late!" "It's no rush Sam, this isn't done by appointment." Simon told her, beginning to walk, Samantha fell in step beside him, leaving the large Colonial style house behind them. Just before they got to their large black iron gate at the end of the driveway a figure dropped down in front of them, and stood up. His short white hair blew around in the warm breeze, Samantha's purple eyes caught his indigo ones and she caught her breath a moment, then smiled at him. "Andy!" Samantha happily exclaimed. 'It's Andrew." the kid said, frowning "You got that bear again, it's going to hold you back Sammy" he said matter-of-factly, then looked away from her, he was holding something behind him. "It's Samantha" she told him smartly, sticking her tongue out, "and of course I brought my bear." "You really should leave it behind, you don't need your hands full." Andrew told her, looking back at her. "Hey, leave her alone about it, she brings it to annoy us. Why did you come here, we could have met at your place?" Simon asked, they stood a few feet apart now, Samantha stayed back a bit. "Yeah, well, you guys were late, I came to make sure you remembered." Andrew shrugged, looking at Samantha again. "You know that teddy bear will get ruined if you keep hauling it everywhere." "Awwwww, you're worried about my teddy!" Samantha smiled, hugging her teddy tighter, even in the dark she could see Andrew blush. "Whatever." he shrugged it away and looked back at Simon. "You guys ready now?" "Yeah" Simon nodded, beginning to walk around Andrew and move forward, Andrew turned to the side and backed up a couple of steps, he then fell in step beside Samantha as they passed through the gate Simon opened. Samantha felt something get pressed into her free hand, something sharp pricked the tip of her pointer finger. "Oww" Samantha exclaimed quietly, wrapping her fingers around the item, feeling more pricks, she brought the item up to some of the moonlight, it was a rose. She looked over at Andrew, surprised, but he walked ahead of her. Simon closed the gate and looked at his sister, and shook his head, "Now where did you get that? You know, Andrew does have a point about your hands being full!" "Uhhhh.... buuuh" Samantha began, lost for words, her mouth hanging open, then she just kind of groaned under her breath, put the rose against her teddy bear, then bent down, she tied the rose to the teddy using the ribbon around its neck, and then caught up to the other two, they hurriedly walked out of view of their house. The large guy with the sleeveless t-shirt knocked the store owner over the counter and into a full display of plastic mugs with nascar logo's on them, and let out a laugh, turning back to count the money he had yanked out of the cash register. "Ya shoulda shut up." he called over his shoulder to the man picking himself up out of the floor and holding his chest, a couple of the big guys buddies laughed high pitched and stupidly from one of the aisles where they were grabbing stuff to take and busting other stuff. "Why are you doing this? You think you won't get caught, I got camera's!" the store owner said, coughing and spitting out a mouthful of warm blood. "Camera's ain't no problem for us, and we ain't gettin caught, just shut up an stay outta the way old man." the big guy snapped "And come open that safe." "Bastards, you'll pay, you'll see!" the store owner desperately yelled, lunging for the guy with his money, the big guy hardly blinked, just flung out one strong arm and sent the store owner flying back again, this time half way down the aisle. "You filthy humans are the one's who'll be payin sooner or later." the big guy growled, leaping over the counter, he grabbed the door on the safe and ripped it off with no effort. 'Now that's what I'm talkin about, that was pocket change in the register." he laughed. A metal can of shaving cream bounced off his head, at first he didn't move, he just paused, mid money counting, then turned around and glared at the store owner. "Don't learn, do ya?" he growled, his buddies laughed high pitched and insanely, flew over the two aisles and grabbed the store owner, beginning to pummel him. "Stop!" came a young voice from the doorway, a male voice, all four turned to look at who it was, the store owner grimaced in pain and thought he was seeing things, all three of the criminals laughed, and went back to what they were doing. "Stupid kid." the big guy laughed. "He said stop!" came another young male voice. "You kids sleep walkin with a a death wish or somethin? Get outta here if you know whats good for ya!" the big guy shouted at the two pajama clad little boys, that looked to be from eight to ten years old or whereabouts, one with bluish black hair, one with startling white. The sound of a little girl giggling caught his ears and he felt something tug at his shirt, he looked down, made an iritated face and started to push her away. "I think it's past yer bed time sweet heart." The little girl didn't budge. "I really think you should put the money back mister, it isn't right to steal." she giggled. "You kids, leave and go get help! Please!" the store owner shouted. "Shud'ap!" one of the guys holding him snapped, punching him in the gut. "Let the man go!" the kid with the white hair snapped, the look on his face showed that he meant business. "Hey, don't he remind you of Claudio?!" the other guy laughed loudly. "Never saw him as the kid type though." "Alright, but don't say we didn't warn you!" The kid with the black hair shrugged, smiling, in a flash he and the other boy had pulled the man off the store owner and flung them across the store, a couple of rows worth of shelving on the aisles going with the men as they flew. The big guys jaw dropped open, he threw the money on the counter and grabbed for the little girl with the purple eyes, she vanished in front of him, her giggle remaining, she re-appeared a few feet away from him, hugging her teddy bear. "C'mere kid!" the big guy growled. "You should have listened!" Samantha laughed, she picked up a wooden baseball bat off the floor, the handle was taped up, she hit it on the floor with her free hand and the bat broke, leaving a jagged sharp end behind. "What're ya gonna do kid?" the big guy asked, trying to sound brave, but obviously scared. "I'm sure you can figure that out for yourself." Samantha laughed, her purple eyes flashing red momentarily. "Lousy kid, c'mere" one of the other men shouted from the other end of the store, "Friggen kid killed Mike!" he was shouting. "What?! A kid!" the big guy exclaimed in disbelief, and shook his head. "Just what the hell are you?" he looked at the girl again but she ws gone, he swallowed hard and began to look around nervously "Even vampire kids ain't that strong!" A loud scream from his buddy filled the room, the big guy began to sweat. Suddenly a fire from inside him engulfed his heart and shot through him, a muttered, unformed "Guh" escaped his throat as he fell to his knees, he looked down at his chest where the bat was sticking through him, his hand grasped air in front of him, his eyes were wild, he turned and looked at the pretty, smiling face of the little girl and coughed. He fell forward, his hands catching him and holding him off the floor, blood pooled below him, he looked down at the tiles, then up, he felt his energy running out of him with the blood, suddenly he grabbed at the little girl, she backed up but his nails tore through her shirt sleeve and ripped open her arm. "Ow!" Samantha cried, then stepped back, the bad vampire disappearing in front of her, leaving behind a skull ring with emerald green stones he once wore so proudly under the leadership of Claudio Chambers, the Darkness Demon who had the same features as the white haired boy in the store. "You alright Sam?" A voice said beside her, a hand was placed on her shoulder, she turned to look at Andrew. 'Yeah, but Mom's gonna kill me when she finds another night shirt ripped." Samantha sighed. "I wish we could just tell her, but she might be scared that we're different" she added. Simon ripped the sleeve open more to look at her wound. "Someday maybe she can know, Dad too, but we need to be more careful with these guys, we can't play around with them as much, mess up too many clothes that way" Simon laughed. "You.......... you kids...... who are you? Are you angels?" the store owner called from where he sat, down the one aisle, he was holding his sides and grimacing in pain. "Dunno, but probably not." Andrew called to him, the three left the store and flew off, blending with the shadows of the city. Terra Mae 3/24/2002 |
