Ancestors
by

I often wonder what it was like,
A thousand years ago,
When our ancestors roamed the continent,
And planted things to grow.

We look back with the eyes,
As we see today,
But what they had way back then,
Permitted them to stay.

Whether they camped on desert land,
Or on a mountain side,
They always carried within themselves,
A deep sense of pride.

They conquered land and forest deep,
And on the waters, they held sway.
But for the children, what did they do?
They learned adult ways, through play.

Today we harken to the past,
With beliefs, somewhat lost,
But the spirit world of yesteryear,
Will be with us, without cost.

Of medicines, they knew a lot,
Of herbs and spices too,
And today our cultures still,
Partake what we learned is true.

So when I look down at my hands,
I see them passed to me,
And as I beat the drum,
I think of my ancestry.
