The Portuguese Final was held on March 7th at the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon, hosted by Margarida Andrade & Eládio Clímaco. The winning song was chosen by the votes of regional juries.

Adelaide Ferreira had previously participated in one of the 1980 Portuguese semi-finals in the group As Alegres Comadres, and she also came 5th in the 1984 Portuguese Final. At the Eurovision, she came 18th.
