The French Final was held on March 31st, hosted by Patrice Laffont and Catherine Ceylac. The winning song was chosen by the votes of TV viewers who had been asked to vote for their favourite song.

Roger Bens had previously come 6th in the 1984 French Final (in the group Victoire), and at the Eurovision he came 10th.
