Many many years ago, when I were but a were slip o' a thing, my family used to go to Lakes Entrance for two weeks in the summer holidays. We took our boat and loaded the car (and boat) to the hilt with everything that a family of 6 might need. I have many fond memories of Lakes Entrance, and you lucky folk can now see some of the pics I have taken in more recent forays. The one above shows that delicious sense of anticipation of reaching the pounding surf of a mighty ocean beach.
Lakes is a fishing town and the tourist centre of far East Gippsland.
How many people? Dunno. Must find out. Much of the town
sems to be made up of motels, hotels and caravan parks. There is
also a YHA that I thoroughly recommend - it is a former motel that has
been renovated as a hostel and I reckon it is really groovy.
Just like Mt Buffalo (I presume you've looked at that page???), Lakes is a great place for sunsets. Let's face it, anywhere seems to be a great place for sunsets as far as I am concerned. :-) On the night I took these shots, a cool change had swept through and what felt like a southerly gale was whipping the sand up to waist height. Not a good time to be wearing shorts (unless you like having sand blast your legs to shreds).
The town is separated from the 90 Mile Beach by a sand spit and Cunninghame Arm. The scalloping and fishing boats tie up in the western end of the arm in the safe harbour there. Boat access is restricted to the western end of the arm by a footbridge which forms the main access to the ocean beach. On weekends and during holiday periods paddle boats, tiny two man cats (catamarans, forgotten their technical name) and canoes are available for hire in the eastern, sheltered area. Black swans can be found near the tip of the arm (the east end) feeding on the sea grasses there (hmm, I must see if I can get a better scan of that pic).
