| So, God tells Samuel the prophet one day to go and find a King for Israel, as you do, and who should turn up but young Saul here. So, promoted rather swiftly from shepherd son of a guy called Kish to King of Israel, you'd expect him to be rather thankful to God, wouldn't you? Well, yeah, he was, sort of. But - you guessed it - he messed up. Quite a remarkable number of times, even for a head of state. First couple of times, he reckoned he knew best. God gives him instructions, things don't go quite to plan, so Saul interprets the instructions slightly differently. (D'oh! Saul, mate, they're God's instructions! They're bound to be better than yours!) So, God rejects Saul as King and tells Samuel to anoint David instead. But Saul, realising he quite likes this being-King malarkey thank you very much, appoints David, God's chosen King, as his royal harpist and general all-round relaxant. Hmmmmm. Anyway, this works fine until one day Saul and a few of his biggest mates go off to fight the Philistines, including this guy called Goliath. Well, we all know what happens next. David does the whole killing-Goliath thing, and suddenly he's the people's hero. Saul gets a bit jealous, and, er, tries to kill him. Over and over again. Then when that doesn't work, kills himself. Confused yet? Basically, Saul didn't listen to God. He thought he knew best, and got himself into more and more of a mess. Even when God has chosen us to do something, we still fail Him sometimes. Trust in God's instructions. They're pretty good. Read more in 1 Samuel 8-31 |
