A Brief History of the Fruitcake
The fruitcake was originally given to my mother as a gag Christmas gift. It has since been given as a gag gift on many other occasions, and has accumulated more mileage than my car. Below is a history of the fruitcake.
Dec '94 | Created in the breadmaker. It didn't rise, and the core was still liquid, so the fruitcake was baked for 87 hours at 4 billion degrees--leaving it about as hard as a block of aromatic concrete. |
Dec '95 | Given to Mom as a gift for Christmas, along with a real loaf of fruitcake baked in the oven. |
Hidden in trunk of mom's car under spare tire, so that she could keep it.
Mar 6, 1995 | Sent as a birthday present to Nate. |
Mar 7, 1995 | Mailed to Kristi as a St. Patrick's day gift. |
Hidden in the Dutch oven at Nate's house for several months.
Mom and Dad come to visit. Inform Nate that he has been the proud owner
of the fruitcake for some time.
Discovered in Dutch oven as mom and dad leave. Thrown in to vehicle while mom and dad are shopping at Smiths. Left by mom and dad at the DT front desk for Nate.
Christmas, 1995 | Brought by Nate from Chicago as a Christmas gift for mom, again.
Hidden in Nate's bag, and taken back to Chicago |
April 1996 | Sent with Dan Shaeffer to Jeremy in Argentina. Read the letter to Jere here. |
Brought home by Jeremy, given to Kristi.
September 18, 1996 | Kristi has Scott Hemmert hide the fruitcake in Betsy's car. |
September 26, 1996 | Betsy wraps fruitcake and leaves it at DT as a birthday present for Kristi. |
December 30, 1997 | Jeremy brought the fruitcake with him to Chicago. Nate steals it out of his suitcase and hides it. Jeremy thinks that he must have left it home, because it wasn't in his suitcase. While loading up the car, Nate puts the fruitcake back in his suitcase. |
January 5, 1998 | Jeremy and Robin were at the airport in Chicago for two hours. Nate and family went to visit them. Jere tried to give Nate the fruitcake. Nate kept the box the fruitcake was in, and unloaded the fruitcake back into Jere's bag. Jere boards the plane (with the fruitcake) thinking that Nate has it in the box. |
June 24, 1998 | Toby gets the fruitcake for his birthday. He is much more excited about his other gifts. |
