Ancient Philosophy Paper Part II 10/25/2002 |
|
|
|
Well I got sick at the beginning of the week and had a few social events including a visit from Msgr. Murphy the Director of Seminarians from Portland and dinner and a beer with Dr. McCoy CUA resident Platonist- now it is Thursday evening and I had less than 24 hours to finish that paper for Ancient Greek class. I spent most of the day reading the articles and before I knew it, it was 11:30pm and I still had not written a sentence. I kept asking myself, "how did this happen?" Meanwhile Greg Dube laughed at me and Brian Van Fossen offered words of encouragement from across the hallway. Anyway, here are some shots of the experience: my messy desk, the Greek Lexicon (why was I using that?!), some highlighted articles, and of course my assortment of caffeine, water, and pills to combat sickness. And of course what would any paper be without Chicago's favorite footnote expert Kate Turabian! Somehow I managed to actually finish the paper on, "Heraclitus and the Survability of the Soul After Death" in time for Morning Prayer Friday morning. I never seem to learn my lesson- perhaps because I always seem to pull it off at the last minute... |

Nate's "Learned From Experience" List of Paper Writing Tips |

What would a late night paper writing session be without a quick stop into the local kitchen for a caffeine and sugar feast?! Here you see the seminary coffee pot with a freshly brewed pot of joe eagerly awaiting a brief sojourn in my official Catholic University of America coffee mug on its way to my 3:00am tired and thirsty belly. And while I was at the coffee pot I figured I'd check out the fridge and see what kinds of goodies were available for consumption. Yummm butter patties, creamer, 2 boiled eggs, almost empty jug o'jam, and some assorted condiments. I think I ate the leftover coconut cream pie- otherwise you'd get a good view of that. It appears the fridge is not so stocked on Thursday evenings. Saturdays are a big fridge day but obviously no one has anticipated I would wait till the last minute to write a paper and need to pull an all nighter! |

1.) Start paper 24 hours in advance
2.) Don't get sick
3.) Don't translate all the Greek fragments because it "seems fun"
4.) Drink lots of coffee
5.) Don't waste time writing love letters to Kate Turabian at 2:00am- she doesn't write back and her lawyers have requested you stop.
6.) Don't spend time updating your web page until AFTER the paper is passed in! |

Ok here is a photographic experiment conducted during the paper writing session. This picture on the left was taken at 11:30am when I began writing the paper. I'm looking slightly insane- but well enough to start writing the paper. |

Photo taken at 3:30am. Notice the change in skin tone. Eyes have become glazed and psychotic. The hair is out of control in a Dr. Frankenstein meets James Dean sort of way. I'm concerned that this is what I look like after working on a paper all day. I didn't taken any photos after this- it got worse. |
