| Hi, thanks for checking out the percussion section. I've run into some technical difficulties redesigning the site so I apologize for the lack of available pics and in-depth descriptions and for the boring amount of text I had to put up. I am a percussion performance major at the University of Oklahoma. For 2 mallet marimba Nate uses various models from the Mike Balter Contemporary Series Yarn mallets with rattan handles. For 4-mallet marimba Nate uses various models from the Mike Balter Universal series with Birch handles. For xylophone/glockenspiel Nate uses the entire line of Innovative Percussion James Ross mallets and various models from Mike Balter's Unwound and Grandiosso Unwound Series all with Rattan handles. For vibes Nate uses various models from Mike Balter's Pro Vibe and Super Vibe cord wound series with Rattan handles. I use a leather Innovative Percussion mallet bag exclusively for my keyboard mallets. On timpani I use the entire Vic Firth European Classic Series and the Pro-Mark Jonathan Haas Performer Series. For concert snare drum I use the No. 1 model from Cooperman in Persimmon wood and the Christopher Lamb No.1 in maple from Innovative Percussion. For marching snare drum I use the Oklahoma Drumline standard the Innovative Percussion FS-2, previously known as the Colin McNutt model before he switched to Vic Firth. I use Vic Firth Wire Jazz Brushes, Vater Wiretap sweep retractable brushes, Vater Wiretap Heavy Gauge Wire retractable brushes, and Vater Splashsticks for many drumset and sound effect applications. For playing rock-based music on kit I usually grab either Vater Steve White Hitmakers or Vater Stewart Copeland Standards. For jazz/lighter based music I use Vater 8A, Vater Sweet Ride, and Innovative Percussion "Maple" Ed Soph Model sticks. For my drumset articles I use a Coffin Case Drumstick Body Bag. For drumset I use a Tama Wood Iron Cobra beater for more volume and punch or a Vater Long Range Bomber lamb's wool imitation beater for a boomier sound. I play a 2002 Pearl Export Custom (100% mahogany shells) 4-Piece kit. 18x22", 9x12", 16x16", 5.5x14". I also use a 5x14" Ludwig Acrolite Aluminum Shell Snare Drum, with black galaxy finish. The kit is outfitted with the following drumheads: Snare: Evans Coated Reverse Power Center batter and Hazy 300 snare side. Toms: Remo Controlled Sound Clear with black dot batter and Remo Clear Diplomat resonants. Bass drum: Evans Clear EMAD batter and Evans Ebony EMAD resonant. Moongel and Min-EMADS are used as dampening for snare, toms, and sometimes cymbals. I also use the Puresound Custom Series Snare Wires to obtain optimum performance from my snares *on a budget*, my model of choice is the 14 inch 20 strand model. I use 15" hi hats consisting of a traditional finish K top and a brilliant finish A Custom Mastersound bottom, 16" A Custom Crash, 18" A Custom Thin Crash, 9" K Custom Hybrid Splash with traditional finish outer half and brilliant finish inner half, 18" Wuhan China with rivets, 20" K Custom Brilliant Ride, and a 22" K Custom Dark Ride. I use a Pro-Mark R22 Rattler Sizzle Chain on my 18" A Custom Crash, when the "sizzle" effect is needed, mainly in jazz and ballads. I use a combination of DW, Tama, and Pearl hardware on my set in addition to a Yamaha snare stand. I also use Latin Percussion Cyclops mounted tambourine, Rock Ridge Rider cowbell, and Red JamBlock. I also hope to add a DW 5000 series double bass pedal. My goal in percussion is to be able to cover as many bases as possible, I do my best to play in the widest variety of styles on the widest variety of instruments. I try to reflect on my wide variety of styles with the most simplistic equipment setup that I can. |
