Spider-Man 2
Summer's most anticipated movie was no disappointment. Spider-Man 2 is the real deal, not a stupid follow-up in an attempt to suck out money from a previous movie's success. In fact, the second outshines the first by far. I wasn't interested in Spider-Man at first, thinking it would simply be another shitty movie dominated by special effects, with little to offer past stunning CGI and stuff blowing up. This one stands out, though. Amidst the sea of hyped movies that turn out to be shitty, this one was actually worth it.

The first thing to stand out was the fact that it was actually treated as a sequel: don't bother seeing this if you haven't seen the first. No stupid flashbacks that waste time. Some scenes from the first movie are portrayed in the introduction, and that is all that was needed.

The first movie did a good job of displaying how different Peter Parker is from Spider-Man; the second takes it even further with giving Mary Jane even more involvement and presenting conflicts that arise between Peter and the people he loves because of Spider-Man (romantic problems with Mary Jane, guilt over Ben's death, tension with Harry due to his father's death). This is what makes the movie far superior to the average comic book or action movie: there are many different conflicts taking place at one time, with one person acting as two completely different people having to solve these conflicts.

This all goes without mentioning the things that simply make Spider-Man 2 a cool movie. The fighting and web-sling scenes are all brilliantly done, much better than those of the first, which looked too fake at times. The movie still found room to be humorous at times. And through all this, the common theme is still expressed: choosing between what is right and what is easy. If a movie can entertain you and teach you something, it is certainly a success.

I honestly have nothing negative to say about this movie, except maybe that it costs six bucks to get into the damn movie. And trust me, I was looking hard for something negative, but came up empty: this was one hell of a movie. Watch the first and go see the second; it is well worth that six bucks, as long as you sneak in some candy.
