After a decade of shitty Redskin teams since he left, he's finally coming back to turn this ship around. I'm talking averaging almost 11-5 per regular season. Four Super Bowls, winning three each time with a different quarterback. It was a dynasty based on the kinds of things that matter most in a football game. The players were tough, had heart, and would do anything to win that game for Joe Gibbs. That's what the Redskins, for all their talent, have been missing. Sometimes, it's about motivation and experience. Joe Gibbs will know what to do when his first-half gameplan doesn't work. It's happened countless times in the past, and it will happen again. I'm not talking Super Bowl in the first year (though with all that talent, it's not like you can rule that out) but I am talking about a major turnaround. No more 5-11 with Coles, Arrington, Bailey, and more. In the NFL, having a connection with your players is probably one of the more important issues for a coach. Quote from Gibbs at his press conference for returning to the Redskins: "I want to share one little thing with you. We played a Monday Night game here, I think it was 1984 and we got off to a horrible start. I think we were 1-2. I just want to share this with you. I always talk to the team the night before the game, and before I walked out on that Monday night, we had the team prayer. For some reason, I just said this: "If any of you guys have anything to give the Washington Redskins, give it tonight. Were in trouble." I said that prayer, I stood back up and Ill tell you what I witnessed. A lot of those Redskins had tears coming out of their eyes. Thats what it takes. You have to have players like that. Im so excited about getting started with new relationships with all of the players. I was blessed before with some great guys who laid it on the line. The players, Ill just say to you, I think were coaching and playing in a place where football is really important and its exciting to be a part of." Gibbs can do it, and he will do it. |
