Two years after the moderate success of the Bourne Identity comes the second of the
series of books-turned-movies, the Bourne Supremacy. Matt Damon always carried
Affleck through their movies and it shows. He plays his role to near perfection. The story
continues off from the end of Identity in which he tells the FBI to "leave him alone."
Clearly they "should have left him alone" which is basically the story behind this...except
it's really not the FBI's fault; more along the lines of a Russian president's worker that
wanted revenge for something that Bourne doesn't even remember...as you can see,
the story gets confusing. My first two reviews have been of movies that I thought were difficult to find flaws in. I was biased about Kill Bill because the whole ninja thing is just too badass to criticize, no matter how overdone it might have been. But one of the best concepts behind this movie should have been the potentially incredible fighting scenes in which Bourne basically unleashes technique that he is clueless as to its origin. Unfortunately, this was royally fucked in the ass by overuse of "artistic freedom" by the gay director. I don't know if he's actually gay. Anyway. The director decided to use the whole shaking camera effect to the point where the screen is bouncing around so much while the fighting occurs that you almost become dizzy and can't tell what the hell is going on. It's far more of a distraction than an impressive effect. Needless to say, it pissed me off. The bullshit camera effects were probably the worst, but that's not to say there are no other problems. The story is somewhat unoriginal. Assassin hides from FBI, shoots people, avenges a chick, has a few car chases for fun, and so on. But that's almost what gives it some charm. Still, some sort of extra twist could have helped some. Other than that, you have the fact that the plot is confusing as hell. It's difficult to remember all of the different characters, and you're stuck trying to figure out how they all tie together in the middle of a car chase or something, only to realize they really don't tie together necessarily. Some points are still foggy to me. Those are mostly just small annoyances, though. The movie is still badass. I thought the music was subpar, and I guess it is, but I liked the little theme that was played occasionally. It may be something you've seen before, but it's done very well, save the cameras. You'll like it, even if it pisses you off that it could have been done slightly better. Avoid it if you are easily confused, though. |
