orania, south africa / 12.oct.1999

Orania is a tiny town in the middle of the desert which is owned, operated, and inhabited entirely by white Afrikaners. It's a creepy place -- some would call it Apartheid's last stand -- but most of its residents just want to be able to walk on safe streets, speak their own language, and in general be left alone. Which gives them lots in common with lots of upper middle class folks in South Africa and, for that matter, North America.
