#3 Louisville (2-0) 62 Temple (0-2) 0 It was 42-0 at the half. AT THE HALF! Granted, Temple straight sucks (they lost to BUFFALO 9-3, for crying out loud), but Louisville proved fairly conclusively that they didn't need Michael Bush to whup the Owls. This week could be a different story, as they play host to the Miami Hurricanes. I'm going to venture a guess that Brian Brohm doesn't throw for over 300 yards on the vaunted Cane secondary like he did against Temple. This Miami game is likely the biggest game ever played in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Another game, the game against WVU may be even bigger come November 2. This could be the year for Louisville, if all the pieces fall into place. It's possible that this Miami game could be the launching pad for a BCS campaign for Louisville. Overall, this team looks sharp so far, on the ground as much as through the air. Three Louisville RBs rushed for over 70 yards apiece as Louisville gained over 600 total yards on Temple. Next: v. Miami (1-1)
#4 Ohio State (2-0) 24 Texas (1-1) 7 The Ohio State Buckeyes made the Longhorns look flat in front of a home crowd Saturday night, and exploited the Texas secondary all game long. Young QB Colt McCoy was struggling much of the night, hitting on 19 of 32 but throwing a pick to go with his lone TD. His counterpart on the other side of the field, Troy Smith had no such problems. He ginsu'd the Texas secondary on his way to 269 YDS through the air on 17 of 26 with 2 TDs and no INTs. Although many expected Ginn to have a big game, it was the other receiver, Anthony Gonzales, that the horns left open again and again on his way to 142 YDs and a TD on his 8 catches. The Buckeye D stepped up in a big way after losing 9 starters, and LB James Laurinaitis proved that the Buckeyes still had LBs even after AJ Hawk and company left for the NFL. He intercepted McCoy's third quarter pass which led to a FG that began to put the game away. Next: v. Cincinnati (1-1)
#5 Florida (2-0) 42 UCF (1-1) 0 QB Chris Leak had a career day with 352 YDS through the air and 4 TDs and Florida cruised in the swamp against the Golden Knights of UCF. The Gator D held hapless UCF to a mere 21 YDS on the ground, and only 153 YDS total enroute to the thumping. It was Florida's largest margin of victory since whipping Florida A&M 63-3 in September 2003. The Bottom line is that this was a tune-up for the visit to Neyland this weekend. Next: @ #10 Tennessee (2-0)
#6 Florida State (2-0) 24 Troy (1-1) 17 FSU looked flat coming onto the field just 4 days after an emotional win over rival Miami in the Orange Bowl. This game should not have been this close. The Noles know that (by now I'm sure if they didn't before). Expect FSU to come out fired up facing Clemson at home. Expect Clemson to come out fired up after a last second loss to BC this past week. Next: v. Clemson (1-1)
#7 LSU (2-0) 45 Arizona (1-1) 3 LSU put on a defensive show against a defensive coach's football team, stomping on Arizona in Baton Rouge on Saturday. Some expected the wildcats to hold their own, at least for a little while. I was one of those. I was wrong. LSU dominated thoroughly and completely for all four quarters, with its D scoring more points than Arizona's O. It was ugly early and ugly often. LSU better be ready, because they face a very tough and undefeated Auburn team on the road this Saturday. Next: @ #8 Auburn (2-0)
#1 Notre Dame (2-0) 41 Penn State (1-1) 17 Notre Dame came out and blanked Penn State in South Bend for the first half, and Brady Quinn looked like a man on fire, hitting 25 of 36 passes for 287 YDS and 3 TDs as the Irish cruised in the second week to firm their spot as my #1 team. It was mostly the underneath pass that made money for the Irish, as the Nittany Lions admittedly were expecting some deeper balls. This Fighting Irish team looks to be as competitive as any in the nation, and needed a blowout solid win versus a quality opponent to make the rest of the country take notice. Overall, this was a good game for ND. It helped them gain confidence, it showed how good they can be, and it allowed them to win at home. Next: v. #9 Michigan (2-0)
#8 Auburn (2-0) 34 Mississippi State (0-2) 0 We're coming on the third week of the season, and Mississippi has yet to score. Seriously. They were shut out by South Carolina to start the season, and were manhandled by Auburn this past weekend. Kenny Irons didn't exactly have a Heisman day, rushing 21 times for 69 yards, but the Tigers had almost 400 total yards on a defense that may be among the best in the SEC. Brandon Cox hit 18 of his 27 passes for 249 YDS and 2 TDs through the air and Brad Lester added two TDs on the ground to solidify Auburn as a top tier team. Next: vs. #7 LSU (2-0)
#10 Tennessee (2-0) 31 Air Force (0-1) 30 Are you kidding me? Tennessee dumps Cal in week 1 then narrowly escapes a loss to AIR FORCE in week 2? Insane. Or is it? Just like FSU making off with the win in South Beach in Week 1 then barely escaping Troy in week 2, it's likely that UT was coming off the emotional high of leaping back into the national spotlight. Either way, Air Force came into their house and nearly pulled off the big W. If not for Xavier Mitchell stuffing a 2-point conversion attempt (a la Tom Osborne's gamble vs. Miami for the National Title in the '84 Orange Bowl), Tennessee would be scratching their heads right now to figure out how in the world they got beat AT HOME by the Falcons. Lucky for them they don't have to. Now they get to play host to Florida, which may be what they were preparing for before taking on a scrappy Air Force squad. Next: v. #5 Florida (2-0)
#9 Michigan (2-0) 41 Central Michigan (0-2) 17 This game wasn't even close, and I can attest to that fact, as Gameplan didn't switch to my game until the end of this game. Michigan stomped on the Chippewas all game long, and it was painful to sit through the 4th quarter waiting on my game for this. The hour-long rain delay was the rationale that Gameplan gave, but it was really no excuse. This game was a blowout, Michigan won before the third quarter (or at least early in it), and frankly Mike Hart's 19 rushes for 116 YDS and 3 TDS was one of the best performances of the weekend. They better be ready to strap their helmets on, because they face #1 ND in South Bend this weekend. Next: @ #1 Notre Dame (2-0)
