| Thomas Lucas of Plymouth was, as far as is known, the "first settler of the surname" at Plymouth Colony. Arriving at some unknown time, probably by 1650, as the earliest record of him is found between entries in Plymouth Town records dated 1646, and those dated 1650, Thomas Lucas lived at Plymouth until his death on 6 January 1677/8. Incorrectly identified as having died in King Phillip's war by many early writers on the family (notably Benjamin Shurtleff in his various works on the Shurtleff, Shaw, Atwood families etc.), Thomas Lucas' death has today been shown by Lucas Family genealogists such as James Llewellyn Lucas to be clearly established by a Plymouth Colony Probate record which shows his date of death. According to Mr. Lucas' recently released Lucas Family Genealogy, "From different records we know he was a blacksmith by trade and we see his name in certain estate settlements as being owed money, most likely because these people were his customers. We see also from the town court records that he was several times disciplined for drunkeness, he was fined for refusing to swear the oath of fidelitie. . . "
Descendants of Thomas Lucas' found at Lakenham are those of several of Thomas' children. Thomas' son Benoni Lucas is buried here with his wife Repentance Harlow, daughter of Sgt. William Harlow of Plymouth and his second wife Mary Faunce. There are then several generations of Lucases here that descend from Thomas' son Benoni, as well as son Samuel and wife Patience (Warren) Lucas. Descendants of Samuel here are those of son Joseph Lucas (1689-1742).
There are also many descendants of Thomas Lucas found at Lakenham of his daughter Mary Lucas, whom it has come to be accepted was the wife of Nathaniel Atwood Sr. Nathaniel and Mary Lucas Atwood are also buried here with numerous generations of Atwood's who would also thereby be Lucas descendants.
