THE TWISTED MIND
OF A DEAD PUPPY

Interview by Joey Kamiya

Tonight Ive had the psychotic pleasure of interviewing the Dead Puppy mastermind, Terry psychotic answers Rice. Of course, I had to travel miles and miles and miles (with my Stalker gear, of course) to finally arrive in Kentucky and track down this maniac! It was a difficult task, but eventually I convinced him to do this damn interview (with help from Mr. chainsaw). Actually, this interview was made possible thanks to what you kids call a computer and the Internet. Alright, so I lied... read the interview, puppies!!!

JK: Before we begin, I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions from a poor schmuck like myself!!

TR: Ha Ha Don't call yourself a schmuck (hey isn't that like Hebrew for Prick or something like that) I'm just a regular freak-o-nature like yourself... Any Time!

JK: If possible, try to describe The Dead Puppy's purpose in one sentence.

TR: hmmm ok one sentence haha.. that's hard. (Hey I think I already used up my sentence..) well to make it short and sweet.. I was tired of not being able to buy new music, so I created a site where all the new music was FREE!

JK: After downloading some of the Dead Puppy releases, I've come to notice that you are also a musician. When did music become a part of your life? And when did the idea of Dead Puppy Records come about?

TR: Well I grew up in an extremely country backwoods hillbilly redneck community in a place called CASEY COUNTY KENTUCKY!! So I was raised around old school country music such as, Hank Williams SR, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Patsy Cline etc.. and I always loved singing that stuff.. and Even though my dad was killed when I was a year and half old he played guitar and harmonica, I guess it was kinda genetic.. too bad he was killed before he could pass it down properly ( I never really learned how to play guitar that well, in fact I suck) and let's see as my life went on my Mother was always into bands like THE CARS (big influence) then my STEP DAD came along with his AC/DC and MOTLEY CRUE so that's where my wide range of influences come in.. I never really did much with my music until I was a SR in high school, I mean other than writing lyrics.... ok back to High School, I was dating this girl that I had stole from this guy named NOAH! well I ended up working with him at a local MOVIE theater and we became friends and started DARK HUMOR, which was pretty much a sucky ass screamy band at the time.. you can hear us on DP! we recorded an album and things went from there.. my style has changed so much over the years.. and to get to the second half of the question! (I'm trying not to ramble honestly) I am lucky enough to know BILL MOSELY via the internet.. star of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE II and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES and singer for the band CORNBUGS!! Well one day I was in the shower and the idea hit me that it would be cool to cover a CORNBUGS song for BILL to show him how much of a fan I was.. then It was like hell why not do a full tribute CD! and send it to him.. well one thing led to another and we have DEAD PUPPY RECORDS the faucet for this insane project.. which was a helluva project to pull off being that we had the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE cast reunited for the first time ever portraying their characters. oh yeah and DEAD PUPPY RECORDS the title came from an old joke I heard in first grade.. You can hear it on the web site.. well that joke kinda scarred me I guess.. I mean I love animals but I loved that joke.. I always wanted to use it somehow either as a label name or even a band name and never did so now I am!

JK: What was your response to MP3.COM's new bullshit policy of allowing only a total three mp3 downloads for each unpaying account?

TR: honestly.. FUCK MP3.COM when I started the label they agreed to help me out and said there would never be a problem.. short and sweet they fucked me so fuck them!

JK: Tell us about your experiences while compiling The Dead Puppy's first release, "Music Is Our Life: the Dead Puppy tribute to the CORNBUGS."

TR: Ahh yes yes.. I knew this was coming I guess I jumped the gun a bit earlier.. It was a blast..It was completely new and exciting.. I mean I was still recording and writing music of my own but now I had to find other artists to record songs they had never heard before by a band they would more than likely never hear of (I loved that that's why I continue to do it).. This was hard.. Every dead puppy project is like a fucking episode of SURVIVOR let's make a big list and see who makes it to the end.. We had a great line up.. and still do.. My favorite band of all time SIXTH FLOOR was originally on it til their manager at the time started bitching about copyright issues so I had to remove them.. actually they were paired up with JIM SIEDOW from TCM 1 and 2, getting to that.. that was the most fun.. tracking down all the stars of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE! of course I already knew BILL and unlike popular belief he did not help me track down the rest.. in fact he doesn't even know most of them.. I was helped by a couple unnamed individuals as well as many long hours on the net searching through phone numbers etc.. It was a trip talking to all of them.. I mean MARILYN BURNS (sally) was the difinitive woman (next to Bettie Page) for me in my youth and to all of a sudden have her calling me up just to see how I am was wild.. and ED NEAL (the hitchhiker) was crazy as hell I loved it.. I still talk to one of them as often as possible!! it was a lot of fun and I'm glad the project came out the way it did.. It was a helluva way to start off DEAD PUPPY! (I hope I didn't lose my train of thought there.. I tend to do that)

JK: You are currently compiling a new Dead Puppy tribute release (set for a possible Halloween release date). Tell us about the project and how things are currently coming along.

TR: This project was actually an idea I had before.. I have so many songs written that I could never do justice in my opinion so after discussing it with writing partner GUNTHER VOID we mentioned it to THE SLEEPWALKER of BOYS SUCK and asked if he thought this project would be a good idea.. he loved the idea and said he would definately take part.. SO we pretty much threw the idea out and it is slowly taking shape.. I hope we can release it on Halloween.. IT's gonna be called TOO MANY SCARS and is pretty much based on all the women I've came across (no pun intended,, ok I take that back that was mean) in my life that have left some sort of mark on me.. thus the title TOO MANY SCARS, The artwork is amazing it was given to me as a gift by a woman who is very special to me.. but I lost her long ago.. you'll hear about her in the song BOYS SUCK is doing titled BYE, BE CAREFUL, I LUV YOU

JK: How did you discover MUSICZOMBIE.COM?

TR: It's owned and operated by RICH of the bands SLACKER GEN, SKAGBUNNY and THE FATTY BOOM BATTY PROJECT which I have worked with before (wow a short answer)

JK: Are you a horror movie fan? If so, name a few titles that come to mind... TR: oh my god, I am practically obsessed with HORROR I have over like 600 to 700 videos and a pretty sizeable DVD collection.. some classics that come to mind are.. THE FUNHOUSE, of course the EVIL DEAD movies, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE was of course one of the best, PSYCHO and the first two FRIDAY THE 13th movies.. let's see too many to mention.. I loved the old WILLARD and BEN films, WITHIN THE WOODS is cool, and last night I got the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET box set of DVD's so they're cool of course, I know alot of these are given's but hell what can ya say.. oh wait.. ALLIGATOR is a fave of my childhood along with JAWS, and let's see hmmmm.... STUDENT BODIES was hilarious find it and watch it.. NIGHT OF THE LEPUS (giant rabbits of course I like that)

JK: Personally, I don't like the direction the horror genre is going nowadays. This year, I've only enjoyed Rob Zombie's "House of 1,000 Corpses" and the battle scenes in "Freddy vs. Jason." What is your opinion on all of these new wave horror flicks?

TR: well the WILLARD remake was realy really really good.. I love CRISPIN GLOVER (I'd love to put some of his music up if I could ever contact him) as for HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES It was awesome and no offense to ROB or BILL but haven't we seen this before hmm back in the 70s with other friends of mine... as for FREDDY VS JASON!! I loved it.. very cool how they tied in so much of the old movies.. I mean even pulling a sack over JASON's head which suggested that's where he got the idea to cover his face in part 2 and did no one realize that the guy who was giving all the kids HYPNOCIL also was giving the kids that in part 3 of nightmare at WESTON HILLS I mean it was like they researched all the movies perfectly.. Even if it wasn't BETSY PALMER as MRS VOORHEES they did a good job finding someon with her smile.. and that movie wasn't too TEENAGERISH like most of the movies.. ok time for me to complain...... Dammit someone write a new fucking movie.. let's see the past few years... remakes are running rampant.. we've got PSYCHO (which I loved but that's beside the point), WILLARD (dammit I loved that one too), and now THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE I know I'm gonna love that but damn people if you like these old horror movies why not make new ones.. not rehash the old ones!! ok I think I lost my train of thought there again (damn alcohol)

JK: The music scene nowadays also seems full of shit. Among the small handful of good bands out there, what bands come to your mind?

TR: ALKALINE TRIO!! no doubt about it..BILE never fails to impress me, hmm damn new bands that are out now.. I like QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, THE WHITE STRIPES, POWERMAN 5000 is still rockin' and I really dig CHEVELLE

JK: Describe the types of bands and music featured on The Dead Puppy.

TR: God that's a hard one.. we've got everything from acoustic gospel (phillip smallwood) to cheezy industrial (old school Dark Humor) we've got GOTHIC stuff like CALL ME ALICE and lots of the GUNTHER stuff.. damn I don't know we have everything you can think of but RAP and I've been looking for a good rap artist.. I had someone e mail me the other night saying they were HORROR rap that sounds interesting! JK: What is the future of The Dead Puppy?

TR: I'm not really sure I know we have TOO MANY SCARS, OUT OF TUNE the boys suck tribute, and the NATAS cd's and a few more coming.. as far as the future that all depends on what directions life takes me in.. I mean as logn as my life evolves so does Dead Puppy!

JK: Before concluding the interview, I HAD to ask: on your website, you have two BAD ASS audio samples (on the home page and the reviews page)... would you mind telling us where those came from?

TR: Ha ha Sure.. the Joke on the home page.. (dead puppies) came from a movie called THE WILLIES It's about three kids telling ghost stories in the style of CREEPSHOW or TALES FROM THE CRYPT each story has it's own movie kinda.. and the reviews samples (norman bates) came from the old movie HEXED It's great it's about a guy getting framed for murder and he asks his best friend something like.. "Oh come on you don't believe I did it do you, Do I look like a psycho to you.." and that is her response.. I though it fit my personality perfectly and since people are asking me for opinions of their music..

JK: Thanks again for the interview, and best of luck to you and The Dead Puppy!!

TR: no problem.. I'm anxious to see what people think of this little slice into my head! and by the way your track on TOO MANY SCARS is awesome..
