TELNET

Telnet is a program which allows you to communicate with other computers on the same network.

ARCHIE

If you know the name of software you are looking for - or kind of know the name, use Archie. It goes around the world , checking Archie databases for the file matching your request.


* Here is a link to Archie (139.130.23.2) which finds files. At the "login:" prompt, type archie and press the Enter key. For password, just press the Enter key.

Here is a list of just some of the Archie sites; archies.ad.jp (Japan), archie.nz (NZ) , archie.au (Australia), archie.mcgill.ca (Canada), archie.ans.net (New Yourk).

      Follow these steps to use an Archie site:
    1. Using Telnet to connect to an Archie server. e.g. telnet archie.nz
    2. At the "login:" prompt, type archie and press the Enter key. For password, just press the Enter key.
    3. At the Archie> prompt, type show and press the Enter key to see the set up.
    4. Type set search sub and press the enter key.
    5. Type prog font and press the enter key to find all kinds of font files around.
    6. Write down the hostname (or ip number) of sites having your file.
    7. Use FTP to connect to a given site. and download the file.

GOPHER

Gopher digs for directories. It provide a menu-based search and retrieval search and retrieval function. It's menus are a "table-of-contents" for organizing and locating information.
    Some Gopher sites allow you to use Telnet and use their databases.

      Here is a list of some Gopher sites that allow Telnet connections:
    • Australia info.anu.edu.au login as info
    • Britain uts.mcc.ac.uk login as info
    • Canada nstn.ns.ca or camsrv.camosun.bc.ca and login as fred
