EMBROIDERED PICTURES
PAINTING with THREADS

Natalia Margulis

Born in Russia and graduated from St. Petersburg University, Natalia worked in U.S.A. as full time artist since 1993. Participating in the most prestigious art and craft shows, she has gained recognition and won numerous top awards in contests. Her works were published in the books and magazines, and she taught embroidery classes.

Her passion for fiber helps her to find a needle as a versatile instrument to capture the impression of nature and creates the place were you want to be.

Developing a design she attempts to connect a modern and traditional multicultural elements of hand and machine embroidery, and create the unique intricately stitched cloth. Drawing with threads is improvisation on the plain painted background when hooped fabric is moved freely by hand under machine needle, which serves as a pencil. Or background is created with plenty of stitches with incorporated strips of hand dyed fabric, threads, ribbons, what gives the surface a particular rich textural and saturated colored effect. Surface becomes truly three-dimensional with knots ridges, bumps, and holes, and finally decorated with hand stitches. Different kind of overstitched threads like a shiny and smooth rayon fluffy wool and matt cotton capture the light and reflect it with constantly changeable shades, what adds a glossy iridescent appearance and animated depth to the design.
