| A History: Hull began it's life as a swamp. Later,a group of Monks came and dug drainage ditches around the area and dry land began to appear. On this land, a settlement was built on the banks of the River Hull called 'Wyke'. By the year 1299, King Edward came by and was so mightily impressed that he re-named Wyke the rather wordy 'King's Town upon Hull' This was shortened to 'Kingston Upon Hull', which is seen on road maps but never actually said aloud. The name was shortened again to 'Hull' and then later shortened again by the locals to 'Ull', which is still in use today. |

| The city spent most of it's life being a port and major trading post. In the 17th century, it was considered important enough to hold the citadel, the the counry's weapons were kept. This caused a slight problem when King Charles I came to get the weapons and the people of Hull refused, prefering to go against him and take the side of Parliment. This was probably a good thing as within a few years time the nation had been spilt by the Civil War and Charles was beheaded. The people of Hull for once had backed the winning side (why can't that happen at Hull City matches?) | ||||||||||||||||
| To be continued........ p.s. I hope I'm not offending any of my fellow Hull-dwellers, all this abuse is solely for comic value, I assure you. |
