I started on DarkeMUD a long time ago, I can no longer remember exactly
when it was, but it was during December. It was one of the first
muds I had ever decided to try and I logged on as one of my favorite handles
Ironclaw and played a Werewolf. At the time there was only city,
Akkad, and the rest of the world was pretty much just terrains. There
were some shopkeepers, but at the time there was a bug and I walked into
one of the shops and then discovered that it was closed. I tried
to leave only to discover that there was now a door in the way. I
tried every command that I could think of but could not find a single way
to open the door. I was stuck inside this shop for about an hour
until it opened again (back then DarkeMUD had long days and nights).
Sitting inside a bugged-out shop was not exactly my idea of a great time.
I logged off and didn't return until about mid January of the next year
(1997?).
I logged in only to discover that while I was gone my character Ironclaw
had been deleted. This was really no great loss at the time since
when I made my character the first time I had no idea what I was doing
and screwed it up quite a bit. This time I got my attributes to look
more like I wanted them to (point system) and again chose Werewolf as my
race, but this time took the name Glorfindel.
I started exploring the world this time rather than accidentally get caught
in another shop episode. The first creature I ever encountered was
a Jackrabbit just outside the city of Akkad. At the time I was still
new to the whole mud scene and like any brash young mudder, tried to kill
the jackrabbit. I did not succeed. That little bunny succeeded
in thrashing me quite soundly. Now, I did not die as at the time
I did have the sense to flee from it. Now usually this would also
dehearten me or at least make me frustrated enough to leave again, but
instead I started laughing. I found it extremely humorous that a
Jackrabbit could so soundly a newly created character. At the time
DarkeMUD was still in Beta Testing, but I didn't really know what the heck
that meant.
Well to cut an extremely long story short, I stayed with DarkeMUD for a
long time. I got to know the first Admins fairly well and got along
with just about all of them, or at leat it seemed like I did. I'm
sure that they tired of my endless questions about what does this do, how
do you do this, and etc. I'm thankful that they at least endured
a super newbie's questions with what patience they had.
Anyways, I became a Werewolf Warrior and managed to get to 20th level and
for a very brief time was Guildmaster. I met some great people there
and had lots of fun with other friends that I got to join DarkeMUD.
I became a wiz and then later an arch of the mud and learned a lot about
coding and got a rare chance to see the other side of the mud scene.
I can't remember all the names of the people that I met on the mud, but
there were a lot and I made a few really good friends. I was last
on the mud almost a year ago, I hope that it is doing well and that some
of my friends are still there. If you follow my link there, tell
them I said hello, especially to Helios, MacTorg, Nevin, and Mortdred.
