I'm surprised that you succeeded in counting the words, I would have assumed four was the highest you could go. Real fans don't write slash stories you say? That's odd. I was a fan of BSB when I wrote this, I am a Harry Potter fan and I write slash stories with those characters. That doesn't make me any less of a fan.
Homosexuality is rather common, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, I personally find it more beautiful than love between a guy and a girl for reasons I don't feel like ranting about right now. Maybe some other time, but next time you do come across a fanfic that got slash in it, don't freak. Homosexuality is just as natural as heterosexuality.
