DJ of the Month

Nassoro: Your self, interest, hobbies, music at least three or more in  each. Which artist influence and inspired you to be a Dj artist?

Chief Justice Vinlyfiend CJV: my Interests are  Hip Hop, Avant Garde experimental Interdisciplinary performance art, Martial Arts (particularly Kung Fu), Technology.  Hobbies: DJing (but less and less a hobby and more and more a job), Martial Arts, basketweaving, undersea manatee hunting, extraterrestrial obstetrics.  Music: These days I’ve been listening to a lot of MF Doom; also listen to Kid Koala, Kanye West (first man with a Benz and a backpack), Aesop Rock, D-Styles, and Bob Dylan… Don’t really listen to radio shit.

Nassoro: what does your name mean and how did you come up with it? is there any story behind your name?
CJV: I actually have been going as DJ Vinylfiend for a long time, but just recently switched to Chief Justice. The current political references are obvious, but more than that it doesn’t imply that I ONLY do turntable work. As I’ve begun to branch out into different fields (and different media) the moniker Vinylfiend just doesn’t apply as much. Also, who is going to fuck with the Chief Justice? Regulate on that ass, muhfuckaz! I used to go as DJ Big Daddy D when I was much younger, but I gave that one up for various reasons.

Nassoro: what clubs, venues do you perform at now?

CJV: I just moved to
Pittsburgh, so I haven’t really dug in quite yet. I’ve been spinning at the Club Déjà vu VIP Room for a couple months. Big shout out to DJ Nugget for putting me on and getting me into the Burgh club scene.

Nassoro: How long have you been DJing and how do you make any mix tapes or own albums?
CJV: As I said in my biography, I started DJing in 7th grade, which I guess means I’ve been spinning for like 10 or 11 years. I used to make mix tapes a lot when I was younger, but they weren’t any good. I’ve been featured on the Movementality series of compilation albums (pick up Movementality 2 at www.cafepress.com/movementality2 ... Featuring Mos Def, the Perfectionists, Sage Francis, Noisy Stylus, Ugly Duckling, and more…) and am in the preliminary stages of producing a solo full length album. No release date at this time. These days I’m focusing more on my live work, and getting my rhyme skills up.
