If you eventually decide to breed in the future PLEASE do not take this responiblility lightly. There are way too many unwanted dogs in shelters already. Since we know you are a dog lover, (or you would not be at this site) we should be trying to resolve this unfortunate situation and not adding to it. You must have plans for each and every puppy before the litter is even conceived. The bitches owner must take responsibility for the entire litter. You must be willing to raise or take back any puppies that can not be placed, regardless of the cost of doing so. With all of the puppies, the well-being and after-care is the most important issue you should be taking into consideration.
Also, it's over-optimistic to assume that you will re-coup your investment or even make a profit by breeding dogs. Very few people ever come out ahead by breeding and selling puppies, once they have paid for all health pre-testing, the cost of stud fees, provided veterinary care and food for the bitch and the puppies and have accounted for your enormous investment of time.
Breeding dogs also has its emotional costs. Ask any breeder what it's like to watch and comfort a bitch going through a difficult birth or Caesarean section, or to witness the death of your beloved bitch and maybe the entire litter of pippies. Death plays as large part in life when it comes to breeding dogs and is very heart breaking when any of the puppies and/or the bitch do not survive.
If you decide to go ahead and become a breeder, we hope you will embrace the belief that each new litter of puppies you produce will represent an improvement over the last litter you produced. This means that you DO NOT just choose the stud or bitch down the street, have a litter because a family member wants a dog like mine or just because my dog has a good temperment. You need to find a individual stud or bitch, whose bloodlines will strengthen your dog's weaknesses and emphasize his or her good qualities. The rewards of your discretion will be long lived. |
