Born in Nashville, Freeman was lured into the world of guitar via a friend of his father's, studio player John Pell.
After high school, Freeman wound up studying at Cal Arts and U.C.L.A., and combined his abilities with guitar, studiocraft and songwriting on his debut album Nocturnal Playground in 1985. The next year Moonlighting unexpectedly flung his career into orbit, and the Rippingtons' Kilimanjaro came out in 1988.

Freeman's record label, Peak Records (so named because Pike's Peak is visible from his home in Colorado),
provides a logical extension of Freeman's gifts for production and musical presentation.
The first release was by the British singer-songwriter Mark Williamson, co-produced by Freeman. "I am very
interested in pop music and the vocal side of it, even though I haven't explored that in my band.
I've produced other artists, and my interest in that area has grown. That's how Peak was born."
