Harvey paced the room and waited for the doctor to return.  Nash sat as calmly as possible hoping that nothing was seriously wrong.  They had been waiting for nearly four hours and they hadn't heard a thing.  The surgery was only supposed to last two hours, and they were still at it.  The sun was about to come up and Harvey realized his hands were shaking so he tried to sit down.

"Easy Harv.  Im sure he's gonna be just fine."

"Why aren't they done yet then, Nash?"

"Im sure he's fine.  They'd  have told us if there were any complications."  Harvey's expression changed to one of pure horror at the mention of complications.  Nash was quick to try and calm him when he saw the terrified look on Harvey's face.  "Don't worry bubba he's fine."

"What if he isn't?  What if he's dead and they don't wanna come out here and tell us?"  It was clear that Harvey had lost all rational thought and all Nash could do was put an arm around his friend and be as supportive as he knew how.

"They wouldn't do that Harv."

A tear rolled down Harvey's cheek and he reached up to wipe it away.  "He means so much to me Nash.  I don't know what I'd do without him."

"You know if I recall, you didn't really care much for him when you first met."

"He was annoying as hell back then, but he grew on me.  I...I...love him.  I really do."  A smile ghosted across Harvey's lips, and quickly faded.

"He's going to be just fine.  They'll be out soon to tell us about the surgery and then you'll know he's okay."

"But...something could be really wrong.  Why haven't they come out?"

"I'm not sure Harv, but just be patient.  They'll be out soon."  Nash was trying to sound hopeful, but even he was getting a little anxious after all this time.  Someone should have come to tell them something.  They had gone two hours over how long the surgery was supposed to take.  A knot grew in Nash's stomach as he tried to calm Harvey down.  How was his friend going to take it if something bad had happened?

Pulling himself from his negative thoughts Nash went back to comforting Harvey and waiting for the doctor to return.  Harvey was almost frantic and he was rocking back and forth in the seat as Nash put his arm around him.  Patting Harvey's back seemed to calm the inspector a bit so Nash continued to do so until they heard the doors swish open and saw the doctor walk out to meet them.

"Well, Mr. Leek.  Everything is fine.  He had a little reaction to the anesthetic we gave him first, but he made it through the surgery fine.  There will be a little scarring and he's going to need some looking after once we release him, but it's nothing a little TLC can't handle."  The young woman smiled at Harvey and he seemed to perk up knowing that things were okay.

"Can I see him?"

"Of course.  We have him in recovery now.  It's just down the hall.  The nurse will take you."  She motioned to a nearby nurse and the two men followed her to the recovery room.

Silently Harvey and Nash crept inside and saw him sleeping behind the curtain.  He looked so peaceful Harvey was loathed to even get close, not wanting to wake him.  Those familiar brown eyes slowly drifted open and seemed to smile back at him as he sat down in the nearby chair.

"Hey.  You're looking good buddy.  How ya feelin?"

He carefully shook his head up and down and Harvey smiled.  He was happy to see his friend was all right.   Nash was happy too.  Now he could get back to work and hopefully he'd be able to take his inspector with him as soon as the patient was well enough.

"Well, I'm gonna head back to the barge and tell the others everything went fine."

"Okay.  Tell Ronnie thanks for the gift he left for him."

"Sure thing.  I'm sure he'll be happy to know that King liked the new chew toys."

They made quite the odd couple, Harvey sitting beside King rubbing his paw, and King whimpering softly as the anesthetic began to wear off.  With a smile Nash turned and walked out the room leaving Harvey to watch over his lovable friend and pet in peace.  As he exited he took one last look at the strange pair and shook his head.  Who would have thought a beat up cop and an oversized K-9 could look so right together?
