Notes: This piece was inspired by a conversation on the nashslash list about what Pepe�s reaction would be to finding out that Nash was with someone else and not Joe. I want to thank the list for giving me this bunny because all my Nash Bridges muses had been rather silent as of late. This brought them back to life for while.
Nash and Harvey sat quietly admiring one another at the dimly lit table in the back of Mama Rosa�s Caf�. It had been a while since they had been able to go out on an actual date, and tonight was perfect. This was going to be their weekend. They sipped wine and waited for the waitress to take their order. Harvey was amazed that he never seemed to have to say much with Nash. It was as if their silence was the only conversation they needed at times. A few minutes went by and their waitress returned.
�What can I get you tonight gentlemen?� She flashed them a bright smile that could have lit up the entire building.
�Well, I�ll have the chicken risotto, and he wants the fettuccine alfredo. Can we get some more bread sticks too?� Nash casually took Harvey�s hand and smiled back at the waitress.
�Certainly. I�ll be right back with some more bread sticks and your dinner salads.� With that she turned and walked away humming a tune neither man could quite make out.
�I can�t remember the last time we came in here.� Harvey moved in a little closer to Nash and ran his thumb across Nash�s fingers.
�I�m not sure either, but I think it was a couple months ago.� Nash was quick to react, and brought Harvey�s hand to his lips and gently caresses it.
�Whenever it was it was too long ago.�
After salad and bread sticks, their meals came and they ate and continued to play with one another. They were lost in their own little world and enjoying themselves when a familiar voice was heard entering the restaurant.
�Oh no. Please don�t let that be Pepe.� Nash groaned into his wine glass as he tightened his grip on Harvey�s hand.
�Um�I�m afraid that�s exactly who it is.� Harvey tried to keep back the grin that was creeping over his face, but was unsuccessful.
�This isn�t funny Harvey. He still thinks Joe and I are a couple.�
�Well, maybe seeing you with someone else will help him get the picture.�
�You know you might have a point there. I knew I loved you for a reason.�
A moment later Pepe was at their table grinning like a fool and making himself and his new boyfriend comfortable.
�So where is Joe?�
�He�s at home I assume.� Pepe�s face looked saddened as he reached across the table for Nash�s hand.
�Are you two having problems?� Nash moved his hand away and looked towards Harvey.
�No actually we�re just fine.�
�Then why are you having dinner with your co-worker instead of Joseph.�
Nash took a deep breath and then spoke. �Because Joe and I aren�t together. I�m with Harvey.�
Pepe was overcome with a look of pure horror. He grabbed his boyfriend�s hand letting out a yelp as he practically jumped out of his seat.
�But you two are the perfect couple. You can�t split up. It just cannot be. I won�t let it happen. You have to talk to Joe and work things out. You belong together.� Harvey coughed and got Pepe�s attention. �No offence Inspector Leek, but Joe and Nash are just meant to be. I�m sure you care for Nash, we all do, but true love cannot be stopped. Maybe you could call him?� Pepe reached for his cell phone.
The frustration was clear on Nash�s face as he started to stand up. �For the last time Pepe. Joe and I are not a couple. I would really appreciate it if you would just accept that and leave it alone.�
Motioning for Harvey to join him, the pair began to walk away, leaving a stunned and distraught Pepe at the table.
�That went well.� Nash managed to get out before he burst into laughter as they stepped out of the restaurant.
�I cannot believe you�re laughing about this.�
�Come on Harv, Joe would be laughing too.� He gave Harvey an innocent grin and pulled him in for a hug.
�I don�t care if he�d be laughing or not. I don�t want to hear another word about Joe.�
�I do believe you sound jealous.� Giving off his best angry look Harvey turned and walked towards the Cuda and sat down in the passenger seat. �I don�t think so bubba. What gives?�
Harvey was hesitant to speak, but seeing that Nash wasn�t going to let him slide he started to talk. �Why does he think you and Joe are such a good couple, but we�re not?�
�Harvey you do realize that was Pepe right? I don�t really care what he thinks, he�s just here to get on my nerves.�
�But still! Does everyone think that about us?�
�Everyone who?�
�Anyone?� Are we a good couple?� Most times Harvey�s insecurity was rather cute to Nash, but there were times when he just wanted to slam the man�s head into wall so that he could get a clue.
�What do you think?�
�I think we should get out of the parking lot before it starts to rain.� A few drops of rain began to fall and Nash sighed as he went around to put the top on the car.
�We�re not through talking Harvey.�
�Look, I just get a little weirded out at times. I�ve never had much luck with relationships, and I don�t always know if I�m doing things right, so I tend to think I�m screwing it all up.�
�I know what you mean. My track record speaks for itself. Trust me though. You haven�t screwed anything up.� Harvey was fidgeting with his hands and Nash scooped them up and wrapped them in his own. �I love you Harvey.�
�I love you too Nash.�
�I think we should head back to your place.� Nash quickly shook his head.
�Nick and his poker buddies are there right now. How about your place?�
�As long as you don�t mind King jumping all over you.� Nash chuckled as he started the Cuda and pulled out of the lot.
Fifteen minutes later Nash parked the car in front of Harvey�s and reached for the door handle to get out, but Harvey reached for his hand and stopped him.
�What is it?� Harvey�s response was a passionate kiss. Nash could feel the heat on Harvey�s skin as he devoured his mouth. He gripped Harvey�s shirt tightly and possessively sucked on the tongue invading his mouth.
Needing air both men pulled away and grinned at one another. Without another word, they quickly exited the Cuda and went up the stairs. Harvey fumbled for his keys and couldn�t seem to get them out of his pocket. Nash laughed softly and reached into Harvey�s pockets and found the keys. With his other hand he caressed the bulge in Harvey�s pants and stole a quick kiss as he brought out the keys.
�Looking for these?� He said as he dangled them in front of Harvey�s nose.
�Just open the door.� Harvey practically growled at Nash as he went in for another quick kiss.
�You know I would if someone would stop harassing me.�
�Well if that�s how you�re gonna be, I�ll just-� Before Harvey could finish his sentence Nash�s phone rang.
�Nash...Yeah...He did what?...Okay...Good night bubba.�
�Who was that?�
�Joe. Apparently Pepe called him to find out how he was doing since we split up.� They both began to laugh.
�What did Joe say?�
�He told him that I was better off with you.�
�Well, that�s good.� A smile came over Harvey�s face that surprised Nash. Before he had a chance to respond, Harvey had taken the keys and was pushing Nash into the house and starting to remove their clothing.
The door was practically slammed shut as the two tumbled onto the first chair that was in their pathway from the door. It just happened to be Harvey�s recliner. As they toppled into it, it was swept backwards and the thought that they might actually fall stopped them both in their tracks.
�Someone�s in a better mood now.� Nash grinned up at Harvey.
�Yeah, I guess I do feel better.� He planted a kiss on Nash�s lips and then buried his face in Nash�s neck. Nash leaned back to give him better access. He moaned slightly as Harvey began to rub against him. His erection was already bulging, and Harvey kept toying with him.
The kisses started to move lower and Nash�s shirt was tossed to the floor. Harvey�s soon followed and he trailed his caresses down Nash�s chest. Looking up at Nash, Harvey smiled and brought his mouth to Nash�s pants and mouthed his lover�s erection through the constricting fabric. Nash groaned and barely managed not to thrust upwards.
This earned a chuckle from Harvey as he slowly unzipped Nash�s pants. He licked his lips as he pulled out the aching member. It was already dripping precum and Harvey let his tongue dart out and touch the tip. Nash couldn�t control himself and he thrust upwards at the touch.
�Easy with that thing. You could put an eye out.� Harvey pulled himself up and kissed Nash and licked his way back down his lover�s smooth chest. He stopped in front on his prize and looked back up at Nash. The grin on Harvey�s face could hardly be explained and Nash held his breath for a moment as he felt that warm mouth engulfing his cock.
A moment later he took a breath and let his hand run through Harvey�s curly hair. The warmth going up and down his shaft was exquisite and Nash himself feel every second of the pleasure his lover was giving him. He felt himself getting close and he gripped Harvey�s hair tighter. Feeling no resistance he started to thrust into the willing mouth.
Harvey gave in completely and let Nash use his mouth the way he wanted. He knew Nash was close and he felt his own climax nearing as well. A few more thrusts and he felt Nash explode into him. The hot liquid hit the back of his throat and he moaned as he tried to take it all in. He swallowed as much as he could and then brought his hand up to clean the rest off of his mouth.
Nash reached for Harvey�s hand and pulled him up to sit on his lap. He brought his face close and plundered his lover�s mouth. Nash could taste himself in Harvey�s mouth as he continued to kiss him with as much passion as he knew how.
A need for air broke them apart as well as the irritating sound of Harvey�s phone ringing. Angrily Harvey reached for the receiver and put it to his ear.
�This better be good�Joe? What could you possibly want right now?�He did not. Tell me you are joking�Dear God. Does he ever stop?�Yeah�Thanks for calling�Night Joe.�
�What was that about?�
�Apparently Pepe called again. He asked Joe out to dinner.� Nash couldn�t contain his laughter.
�Is this supposed to make me jealous?�
�Apparently so. Pepe had a plan. He thought if you saw Joe with someone else you�d want to get back together with him. Joe managed to talk him out of it though.� Harvey shook his head and rolled his eyes.
�Sometimes Pepe scares me you know that?�
�I think he has that effect on most people Nash.�
�You might be right. You just might be right.� Pulling Harvey closer he started kissing him again. �Now where were we?�
�I think it was your turn.� With a devilish grin Harvey popped out of the chair and pulled Nash with him to the bedroom.
They got halfway there when they heard the unmistakable sound of King coming up behind them. Before they could do anything, he pounced and sent them both to the floor beneath him.
�King! Heel!� Harvey screamed, but the oversized dog stayed right where he was licking Harvey and Nash�s faces.
Finally Harvey crawled out from under King and grabbed his collar and led him down the hall. Nash heard him tell King to stay put and scolded him a bit, and the next thing he heard was a soft whimper from the dog. A moment later he heard Harvey padding back down the hall.
�He just wanted to say hi.�
�What?�
�King just wanted to say hi to you Harvey.� Harvey groaned and shook his head.
�I love that dog, but sometimes he�s just too much.� Nash opened his mouth to speak, but the sound of the phone ringing stopped him yet again.
�Oh for Pete�s sake who�s calling now?!� Harvey shouted as he waved his arms around in frustration.
�Hello�This is Nash�yeah�okay�We�ll be there in ten minutes�Don�t worry about it bubba�we�re on our way.�
�Where are we going to be in ten minutes?�
�Inger is sick. Joe�s gonna take her to the emergency room. We have to go take care of Lucia.�
Both men quickly made their way downstairs and picked up their shirts and put them back on and headed out the door. As promised, they arrived at Joe�s in ten minutes to watch Lucia. They ended up being there until the next morning when Joe came back to catch a short nap before going back to hospital to check on Inger.
�So she�s going to be alright?� Harvey asked as Joe threw his coat on the kitchen chair.
�Yeah. Doctor said it was appendicitis. She should be out in a day or so.�
�That�s good.� Nash hugged Joe and then sat down.
�Sorry I ruined your night Nash. I know you and Harvey had been looking forward to it for a while.� Joe frowned and tried to apologize, but Nash wouldn�t have it.
�I told you Joe. Don�t worry about it. Harvey and I will have other nights together.�
�Yeah Joe. You and Inger were more important than our night out.� Harvey chimed in hoping to lessen Joe�s feelings of guilt.
�Still, I wish I hadn�t interrupted things.�
�I�m not gonna tell you again. Stop apologizing. You would have done the same for Harvey or me if we needed it. So drop it. Go get a shower and a nap and then go back and see Inger. We�re gonna take Lucia to my place for a while.� An exhausted Joe nodded and started for his bedroom stumbling slightly.
Nash shook his head and reached for Harvey�s hand. He caressed it and then they stood up to go get Lucia ready to go.
Lucia screeched as she stepped off the elevator and saw Nick standing near the elevator. Ecstatic she ran towards him and leapt into his arms.
�Gampa Nick! Did you know mommy is in de hospitals? Daddy had to took her?
�Yes dear your uncle Nash told me, but I want to hear you tell me.� With that the young girl led Nick to the living room and began to talk about her mom and dad�s trip to the hospital and her stay with uncle Nash and uncle Harvey.
Nash watched as his father was swept away by Lucia and shook his head as he headed to the kitchen for a drink.
�You want anything Harv?�
�Nope. I think Im going to go lay down and take a nap though.�
�I think I�ll join you.� Harvey started for the bedroom, while Nash called out to Nick. �You think you can handle her for a few minutes Nick?�
�Yes Nash I�m sure I can. Now go away we�re busy.� Nash nearly laughed at his father�s response as he sat there listening to Lucia chatter away as she colored in her coloring book.
Quickly he made his way to the bedroom and settled in beside Harvey and was fast asleep as soon as his head touched the pillows. The pair was awoken by the sound of Nick�s voice calling from outside the bedroom door an hour later
�Nash it�s Joe.�
Groggily Nash stood and took the phone from Nick and went back to the bed. �What is it Joe? Is everything okay?�uhuh�yeah�you didn�t bother us�dinner would be nice�Nick can watch Lucia�sure�okay�see you tonight.�
�Everything okay?�
�Yeah. I told Joe we�d have dinner with him tonight.� Harvey nodded and turned over, and clutching his pillow went back to sleep.
A few hours later they were heading out to meet Joe as Nick and Lucia waved good-bye as they entered the elevator.
Joe was seated at the table when Nash and Harvey arrived. They waved and joined him. The three talked and ate into the night. It was nice respite from the last few hours of stressful events. Everything was going fine until they heard a voice coming from around the corner. Nash and Joe groaned as it neared them and tried to keep a smile on their faces when Pepe walked up to them and sat down.
�Hi�Pepe.� Joe tried to look away, but the blindingly yellow suit Pepe was wearing seemed to have him mesmerized.
Nash and Harvey nodded and stared blankly at the suit wishing it would go away and take its owner with it.
�This is interesting. So are you and Nash talking things over?� Pepe�s hand went to his lips as he looked from Nash to Harvey and then to Joe.
�You do realize this was a private dinner conversation right?� Harvey was beyond annoyed at this point as he blatantly pointed towards the door hoping Pepe would get the hint. Unfortunately for them, Pepe was rather slow on the uptake and chose to sit and chat with them a little longer.
�Of course it�s private Harvey. Maybe you should go to the bar so these two lovebirds can fix their broken nest.� Harvey was seething, but he closed his mouth and waited hoping Nash and Joe would get him to leave, or that they�d let him throw Pepe out.
Nash groaned and turned to Joe who was sitting quietly as the smoke poured out of him watching Pepe go on about how he and Nash had to work things out. Finally unsure what else to do, Joe began to respond to Pepe.
�Well, actually we are trying to work something out. Like I told you on the phone I think Harvey and Nash are good together, better than we ever could be. I want them both to be happy, so I�m helping them plan a commitment ceremony.�
The scream Pepe let loose at that thought was enough to raise all the dead in the entire state of California. Everyone in the restaurant turned to stare as the room went silent. Even Harvey and Nash were speechless at that point.
�But you can�t! You and Nash are supposed to be having a commitment ceremony. Why? I don�t understand.�
�Because, that�s what you do for someone you care for, someone you want to be happy.�
�You really must love Nash.�
�Of course I love him, but I�m not in love with him.� Joe reached for Nash�s hand and held it for a moment as he continued to talk to Pepe who was now reaching for a napkin to dry his tear-filled eyes. �You see Pepe, I want Nash to be with someone that he loves more than anything in the world, someone he trusts and who trusts him with everything. Harvey is that person, so I�m going to do whatever I can to make sure they stay together.�
Pepe sat in silence for several minutes before responding. �You two are so amazing. I really wish I could find a love like yours. Willing to make things work like this, the three of you, it�s almost too much. I want to help. I want the three of you to have the most beautiful commitment ceremony ever. I know a caterer. I dated his cousin. Oh my god his food is to die for. You will just love him. You have to let me help. I can get a decorator too. Where are you having it?�
Now it was Joe�s turn to be stunned. He could hear the words coming out of Pepe�s mouth, but they just weren�t registering. He was sure he had just told him and convinced him that Harvey and Nash were together, but for some reason Pepe was mentioning a ceremony for three.
�Uh�hold on there bubba�what do you mean the three of us?� Nash roused himself from his bewildered state to try and make some sense of things.
�Well the ceremony is for the three of you right? Joe, Harvey and you committing to one another, it�s such a beautiful thing, I just want to make it that much more special.�
Harvey picked his jaw up off the floor and glanced around the table. He reached for his glass of water and gulped it down. This was turning out to be the weekend from hell. Pepe was making it even worse as he started in on colors and themes for the reception and who to get to perform the ceremony.
Nash could hardly grasp what was going on. Everything seemed to be spinning as he tried to figure out how Pepe had gone from Joe wanting to help plan a phony commitment ceremony, to Pepe helping put together a real ceremony for the three of them. Nothing made much sense as he looked over at Harvey and Joe who had equally horrified looks on their faces.
Seven weeks later�
Harvey and Nash stood side by side as they said their vows and the minister announced that they were married. Joe stood beside Nash and Evan beside Harvey as the two men shared a kiss in front of all their friends and family. Off in the background, just behind the last row of seats Pepe stood quietly wiping his eyes with a Kleenex as Harvey and Nash started back down the aisle.
They were the happy couple and everyone was happy for them. Cassidy hugged her father and Harvey and wished them well. Lisa did the same with tears in her eyes as she watched her best friend, and the father of her child having the most amazing day of his life. Nick waited until the two men were seated at the reception to give his congratulations.
�Son, I want to wish you both the best. I�ll admit I wasn�t thrilled about this whole thing at first, but I see how good you two are together, and how Harvey makes you happy. That�s all that matters. I was lucky enough to find happiness like that in your mother, and I hope it lasts twice as long for you two as it did for us. To my son and his husband. Nash and Harvey.� Raising his glass he toasted the couple and returned to his seat. A tear rolled down Nash�s cheek as he watched his father sit down.
�Thanks dad.� He whispered as he leaned in and gave him a hug.
Finally it was time for a little dancing and Harvey and Nash took advantage of it and had a blast. They spun around the floor together and with everyone else that wanted a dance. Joe decided to step in and have a moment with Nash on the floor when a slow song started.
�Congratulations bubba.�
�Thanks bubba.� The two men moved across the floor with such grace half the people stopped to watch them.
�Take care of Harvey. For some reason he loves you.�
�Yeah they keep tellin� me that.� Nash flashed his cocky grin and they kept dancing until the song ended. �Well, I think I better dance with my better half before he gets jealous of you.�
�We wouldn�t want that to happen.�
Looking up they spotted Harvey coming across the dance floor towards them with a smile on his face.
�You two having fun?� He asked, as he got closer.
�As a matter of fact we are, but I think he�d rather be having fun with you.� Joe took Nash�s hand and put it in Harvey�s and smiled as he walked over Inger and asked her to dance.
�Well Nash. We�re married. What do we do now?�
�For starters we dance to this next song, and then after that I�m gonna take you back to the hotel and rip those clothes off.� Harvey feigned a shocked looked and covered his mouth.
�Nash Bridges! You�re so bad.�
�Why yes I am. And you love me for it.�
�I sure do.� The song was getting close to ending as the couple moved closer to the door. As soon as it ended they thanked everyone and made an exit, and headed straight for their hotel room. Just as they reached the elevator they saw Pepe walking out the lobby door. They stopped and waved to him. He waved back with a grin that could only be described as pure joy. Who would have thought that a little misunderstanding would lead to this? Who would have thought that a strange and quirky man like Pepe could turn a long and horrible weekend into the best day of their lives?
