During practice it would be no surprise to see Scott Scrimgeour and Ralph Colford bringing down the top speeds. Scrimgeour would have a hot lap of 30.052 seconds at 119.793 mph while Colford clocked in a 30.068 seconds for 119.729 mph. But when it came down to brass tacks it would the Hardees machine of Colford landing the pole at 30.046 seconds for a whopping 119.816 mph sizzler. Scrimgeour would flank Colford with a solid 30.159 seconds at 119.368 mph.

Colford would only get 9 laps in the books before the Skoal Bandit would make a move heading into turn 1. Scrimgeour would rock like Earnhardt JR as he took off into his own time zone. Colford and Mullin would battle it out for the number two spot over then next thirty laps.

The sole caution of the night would come out when Dave Blaxland would lock up the brakes on his Miller High Life machine sliding up into John Agnew. Chuck Plaxton would also get collected in the turn four melee.

Pit stops would occur on lap 33 with Scrimgeour and Mullin getting off pit road first. On the green Scrimgeour would continue to make tracks while Colford and Mullin would battle it out for second spot again. Thirty-one more laps would click off before Mullin would make the pass for the lead heading into turn 1. It would be the back stretch before the pass would be complete but unknown to Mullin fuel would now be a question.

With just 5 laps to go Scrimgeour would start applying pressure. Coming to the white flag the Havoline  team's heart would sink as the fuel pressure light came on indicating they may not make it back to the line. But the #28 car would stay in the throttle and gamble it all running out of fuel heading down pit road.
