Scott Scrimgeour would have the fastest time in practice at 181.313 mph. But it would be Dan Searle  once again living up to his "Rocketman" nickname claiming the pole with a blistering 31.211 second lap effort good for 177.630 mph. Ralph Colford would sit on the outside pole with a solid 31.317 second qualifier weighing in at 170.029 mph. Vince MacDonald and Bryan White would also have stellar qualifying runs as the occupied row two.

The first caution of the night would come out on lap 2 when Harry MacLean got it sideways and then crashed hard into the turn two wall. The impact would sent STP Pontiac across traffic. Fortunately for MacLean, Scott Mullin would soften the blow with his Havoline Ford taking most of the force.

Lap 20 would be a scary ride for Ralph Colford and Chuck Plaxton as the 27 car got into the 29 car sending both drivers through the in field. Ironically the caution would not be needed as both cars slid harmlessly out of the way.

The officials would have to wave the yellow one lap later when Jason Day got into the Skoal car of Scott Scrimgeour sending the 33 up into the turn four wall. Geoff Bonner would also go for a spin as he lost it under braking trying to avoid the 30 and 33.

The race would restart on lap 25 with Bryan White in the lead. Dan Searle and Jason Day would apply plenty of pressure to the 5 car with Day taking over the lead on lap 27.

But Day would also be a victim to the slick track on lap 29 losing the rearend exiting turn two. Pete Seymour would have nowhere to go and would be collected as well.

Things would go horribly wrong for Scott Scrimgeour, oddly enough on lap 33, when he got loose entering turn one. It would be a wreck reminiscent of the Petty crash in 1989 when the 43 spun on it's nose down the front stretch. Vince MacDonald would also go for a solo spin in the same spot making NASCAR officials wonder if oil was down on the track in that area.

The race would restart on lap 37 with Hardees driver Ralph Colford in the lead flanked by bowling buddy Tony Urquhart making a return to the 88s after a summer absence. The two drivers would touch exiting turn four sending Colford to the wall and handing the lead to Urquhart. Bryan White would waste little time re-assuming the lead.

Lap 40 and the drivers are racing like it is 5 to go and they still haven't made the half way mark. Coming off turn four Colford has a head of steam on but can't hold the car low drifting up into Scrimgeour taking the Skoal Bandit for his third spin of the night.

Restart lap 46 with Day in the lead followed by MacLean. The 43 drifts too high in turn four collecting the wall dropping the STP machine back to the 10th spot. Trouble on lap 50 would see the largest wreck of the race as Plaxton got a little loose and then was turned by White traveling a little too close. Also collected would include White, Searle, Seymour, and Scrimgeour.

Green flag again on lap 54 with MacLean in the lead. Day and Colford would push the limits as the teams tried to take it three wide. MacDonald would get bounced up into MacLean as Colford passed on the low line.

Hard racing on lap 75 would see White get into Colford sending the Hardees car into the turn four wall by itself.

Lap 85 and the Zerex car would get under the 5 car of White sending him hard to the wall in turn three.

Lap 89 and hard chargers Plaxton and Day get together as they give chase to Dan Searle. Colford also gets collected in this mess at the start finish line.

Lap 95 and White overtakes Mullin for the second spot and continues chasing down Searle. With one lap to go, Searle would bobble heading into turn one giving White the room he needed to stick the nose of his Levi Chevy under the Bud car of Searle. It would be a drag race down the back stretch but the newer tires on the 5 car would prevail taking White to his first 88 series win.
